First time in Rome

Hi everyone,

My friends and I will be traveling to Italy for the first time next month. Our Alitalia flight is scheduled to land a little after noon. We'll have to wait around for our checked luggage, then we'll be heading straight to our hotel near Roma Termini via car service. After researching on this forum, I'm hoping to grab lunch at Trattoria Monti which is a 5 minute walk from our hotel. Question to anyone who's familiar with FCO, will we be able to make a 2PM reservation? I think they close after 2:45PM? Also, if we can't make it to Trattoria Monti, does anyone have any recommendations for good casual places nearby the Termini? Thanks in advance!

-Loopy

Difficult to add something to the exhaustive answer provided by Maureen about timing. If it will be too late for Trattoria Monti I would suggest a stop at Panella (via Merulana) an historical bakery and food-shop where you can sit and taste many delicatessen. It's quite expensive so pay attention to your choices. If you go there in other hours (before dinner or for brunch time in weekend) consider they have a 12€  buffet formula.
    Enjoy your stay in Rome!

maureen and tavole have covered it, but i would add the tavola calda (cafeteria style) at Roscioli (Via Buonarroti 48, just off piazza vittorio emanuele). they have pasta, baked veg, pizza by the slice, pastries, and can make sandwiches to order...on hot pizza bianca!!

Thanks everyone! I'll try and make reservation for 2:30 if they'll let us. We're staying at Una Hotel Roma which is a7 minute walk to Trattoria Monti according to google map. If not, Roscioli sounds good too. Thanks again :). -Loopy

Panella is a great idea. Another option, further up the street in Piazza San Giovanni in Lateranno 64, is Conter. A newish place where you can get pagnoetlle - small rolls stuffed with things like pumpkin, gorgonzola and porcini. It's not typical Roman, but a very cute and friendly place. They also have wonderful salads.

You're unlikely to be even in the baggage claim area until 12.30 and may wait 30 min for your bags. One never knows. The trip, if it's a weekday, is unlikely to be less than 45 minutes, possibly an hour. You might make it, but you should be ready to phone the restaurant and ask if it's too late or cancel and have a plan B (a good bar or tavola calda). The hotel could phone for you when you arrive. Trattoria Monti is a good ten minutes from Termini, and your hotel could be quite far away: "near Stazione Termini" covers a lot of territory.
