You know those delicious looking half moons in the front case of Lyndell's in Central Square?
They're disgusting.

Thanks for the head's up - I'm in Central Square often & will avoid at all costs now!

Yeah, they don't use butter in their baked goods and the oily shortening taste permeates all except their cannoli , which are actually edible.

i find all of their baked goods, at least those I've tasted, to have be really bland, not particularly moist, and for what little flavor they have to taste like shortening. They sure get a lot of love for a place that has never once served me something that I found even remotely approaching good, never mind exceptional.

I feel the same way. It's supermarket-quality baking.

It sounds worse than supermarket - quality baking!

I think they're something of a nostalgic type guilty pleasure for a lot of people. I know my wife and I used to enjoy an occasional stop at the Lyndell's original in Somerville. Two half moons to bring home, and enjoy them in front of the tv with an ice cold glass of milk. Dunno. We like em! It's like eating oreo cookies...a tingle of childhood.

And the birthday cakes with Red Sox games and Barbie dream castles on them? Only edible if you're 5 and already hopped-up on sugar.

Or 45 and enjoy a sugary sweet traditional cake as I do :-)
We like Lyndells half moons and cakes, especially the opportunity to get a super decorated one for our daughter's birthdays (like the Little House on the Prairie one they made for us last year).
Definitely to be avoided if it's not your style of dessert.

It is my style of dessert -- I really like the ones at Francesca's, in the South End, for example -- it's just that I thought the ones at Lyndell's were really, really bad.
