Kid-Friendly Bar/Restaurant, or Kid-Friendly Bar and then Restaurant - in the Mission, or nearby?

Friends are coming in from out of town (just found out), dining with them tomorrow night. Son is I believe 6 or 7. This summer we took him to the Orbit Room - no problem having a cocktail there first with a child before moving on to dinner at Zero Zero Pizza - and he's not a fussy eater at all. They often take him to pubs (with full bars, ala Phoenix) (and Phoenix is an idea) that serve food (Houston area). I'm thinking: Hog & Rocks, or Schmidt's (but Schmidt's is only beer & wine, and the dad specifically wanted cocktails)? Maybe H&R first, then Schmidt's? or maybe Limon Rotisserie for both? We will be on the fly, so probably can't make reservations. I'm blanking on other cocktail-y places that would serve to kids that we could eat at too, or even pre-dinner drinks (but kid friendly), and then casual for dinner. Doesn't have to be highly innovative or spectacular food - another time I took them to that burger/wine place on Valencia between 21st and 22nd (or 23rd?) - can't remember name - it used to be Watergate, and then Senses. but again, only beer & wine too - just trying to give a sense of type of place for dinner.

any other ideas? we will all be on public trans, so don't want to travel too far from cocktails to dinner.

Thanks!

Beretta would be a good fit. Good cocktails, good food, a fun place. Cha Cha Cha is another one that comes to mind. Both can be a bit noisy, but that's something that comes with the cocktails, usually.

Thanks, BKC. I personally didn't like Beretta's food, but you're right, that's also exactly the kind of place i'm looking for. and funnily enough, these same friends and i used to go to that space when it was one of its former incarnations. May be tough getting in without a res, have to see how early we can hit it. Cha Cha Cha is another good idea. Thanks!

We went to Beretta, and it was perfect, although only because we sat outside, because by the time we got there - 6:30, for 5 of us - the wait was 45 minutes. We were told we could sit outside right away, when it was pretty chilly and of course the fog had rolled in, but the outside little area, with good cover and heat lamps, was absolutely ideal for our party. The food was much, much better than i'd had before - we had appetizers of bruschetta with favas, wonderful meatballs, polenta with blue cheese - all really, really good. I still think their pizza is HIGHLY over-rated - cracker-like crust, pretty flavorless. We ordered the margherita burrata - cheese was fine, but for me that crust was very anemic, and then much later we ordered a sausage pizza with a cream drizzle, which was even more tasteless - i've never had such tasteless sausage. i think their pizzas are truly sub-par. Also, a risotto with prosciutto and i believe ricotta, was kind of sloppy and again not very flavorful. Service was slow, but we absolutely recognized that it was a Friday night, very busy, and our waitstaff was helpful and attentive as they could be. Going inside to use the restrooms made us (older folks) very glad to have not sat inside - incredibly loud and a total scene. All that said, i would definitely go back and have some apps, a cocktail or two, and the primitivo wine we ordered (2 bottles) was only $32 apiece. Very enjoyable evening. So, thank you, BKC, for making me reconsider a place I had written off previously. thanks to all for your suggestions!

the place you're thinkign of is B3 - which might have closed, i keep hearing different things.

one place you might want to consider is luna park (50% off deal on scoutmob right now too!) - extremely kid friendly, has cocktails. the thing is; part of the reason that i love luna park isn't that the food is amazing (it's certainly very good though), but because there's really nowhere else in the mission that serves that style of food - but if you have out of town guests, you might want osmething a bit more "innovative".

oh i forgot about Luna Park! that's actually perfect. my friends used to live here for many many years, so they're familiar with it already. I think the food at LP has gotten better than it used to be. And yeah, with the kid, we're not looking for molecular gastronomy (although the kid does eat pretty much anything - he's already quite the little world traveler!) Thanks!

If LunaPark still has tabletop smores for desert, that seems like a kid-crowd-pleaser

Eureka! on 18th might work well-especially on the early side. Or what about Pi Bar?
