Cafe Boulud or Marea - Anniversary

Hi Hounds,

I have reservations for both to celebrate my 6th anniversary on Saturday night. Tthoughts? Have read mixed reviews on both on this board. We enjoy fine dining but don't want to be in an overly stuffy environment. Typically we would be at a downtown restaurant but figured we would try something different and these both had availability on short notice.

Is there a consensus? Comments are appreciated.

Which restaurants at this price point have you enjoyed in the past? Marea and Cafe Boulud, as you know, are very different, so your prior preferences might provide some guidance. Marea is less stuffy than Cafe Boulud (which attracts a more mature clientele), but still rather corporate compared to Scarpetta or Babbo.

Between the two I'd choose Marea, but my opinion and the "mixed reviews" matter less than your own expectations for your anniversary celebration.

Just in terms of the dining room, I feel that Cafe Boulud's room is a bit oppressive due to the low ceiling and only one window, but others may consider that intimate. Marea's room is more airy with a higher ceiling and many windows, though it indeed seems more corporate.

Between those 2, I would pick Marea for overall ambiance (if you can get a quite table) and food. Jean George is not stuffy either if you have not been there or the 4 Seasons Restauant.
