Unique to San Francisco or what not to miss?

Coming to CA from NY for first time. Any types of food or specialties of San Francisco that are not to miss? Will be staying at the Mandarin Oriental - any place for dinner in walking distance?

      Go to Perbacco -- awesome Italian, 2 blocks away. My father stays at the Mandarin Oriental for business every few months and we have a tradition of going there whenever he is in town. A longer walk (more expensive, too) Ame in the St. Regis is absolutely outstanding.
