Knife sharpening in Vancouver?

Hi,
Sorry I'm sure there was a thread on this already but I can't find it. Sooo, where's a good place to get my knives sharpened? They aren't particulalrly cheffy fancy, just really dullllllll.
Thanks.

This guy did a freat job on my Hattori knives. http://www3.telus.net/public/kitano/ He picked them up and delivered them a couple of days later. I've never had knives so sharp and they have remained sharp for months now.

Hey, Kitano looks like a nice alternative to Santoku! I'll have to give him a try, thanks.

-The before and after pic of a damaged knife repair was a bit scary looking though, it looks like he went from a chef's knife to a slicer.

A chef friend of mine has also recommend Kitano.

      Santoku Japanese Knife Store

      Address:
      1118 Homer Street
      107
      Vancouver, BC
      Canada
      Tel: (604) 568-7660

Overkill I realize for cheap knives, but if you ever do get a blade you like, or if you already have a good quality Japanese knife, he will put a scary sharp edge on it.

Yup that was the thread - the one with the goofy title ; )

Thanks so much for the Sharpening House rec - just got back. The knives are like new and the garden pruners too. Same day service. 5 knives = $25. He even fixed a couple of rather bent and broken ones. Yay!

So glad that you're happy with the service at the Sharpening House!!! Be sure to pass on this recommendation so that this little business stays in business!!

I was so happy I grabbed a stack of his business cards and got all evangelical passing them out on the playground after school (erm, to the parents...). Got some weird looks.

          Was it this thread? http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/586591

FWIW the SO ended up learning how to do it and getting all the gear. Re serrated edges, if you only use your bread saw to cut bread it stays way sharper. Found that out the hard way :-).

I haven't lost any significant "steel" on the tip or heel of the Shun knives I bought that have only been sharpened at home. My old knives were gradually being ground away using Knifex, as convenient, reasonable and so on as it was.

Another option is Quality Saw and Knife on Quebec and 4th. They can sharpen just about anything and also sell a variety of excellent cutting tools. http://www.qualitysaw-knife.com/main.html

Alternatively, Lee Valley carries an excellent reference book on sharpening, as well as all the sharpening supplies you could ever wish for:

I have had great experience with Knife Pro, a mobile knife sharpener. Set up an appointment and Dan Lambert will come to your home or office and sharpen anything you need in a matter of minutes. He can be reached at 604.788.8712.

For the absolute BEST knife sharpening go see Sean at the "Sharpening House" at 5331 West Boulevard in Vancouver. He takes great pride in sharpening all manner of knives, scissors, etc. He's quick and also very reasonable - (he offers a special of 5 knives for $25!). I've been taking my knives to him for years and am always really happy.
