Business Dinner in Midtown West

I am taking some business colleagues to dinner and would like to find a restaurant that is both suitable and within walking distance. We are staying at the Hilton on the Avenue of the Americas and looking for something that has intersting food and moderate prices.

Here are some specs that might be helpful:

Cuisine: No Italian, No Chinese/Thai

Price Range: Preferably $30 and under for entree (understand drinks, etc. will be extra)

Ambiance: Lively, artsy, interesting, but not so loud you can't hear yourself talk

Number of People: 6 or 7

All of these folks are well traveled and live in major urban areas so I would classify them as foodies.

Any and all recommendations welcome.

  1. That's kind of expense account central dining area. I expect most people away from NYC will think a $30 entree should be plenty, but when I take accounts out in mid-town west, the budget is a bit higher. When you say $30 and under for entree, do you expect apps to be extra along with the drinks or is that your food budget? If former, there are some places if the latter I have no ideas. I'd like to find those too. One place I will suggest that I think is quite reasonable for the quality of the food and as a lively place that you can have a conversation at is Ma Peche. The beef 7 ways is great for a group though I don't know how that might fit your budget.

Yeah, this is a hard one. I'm not sure about Ma Peche for business dinner though. I like the food, but the place is too casual and "hip" for business. The dining room feels more like a cafeteria.

I should have been a bit more specific. I am fine with the appetizers and drinks being in addition to the $30 entree, so if that helps with other suggestions. I am familiar with Ma Peche, but it's just not quite right for what I'm looking for.

It's difficult -- actually, imo, next to impossible -- to find a restaurant in Midtown that would be right for a business dinner where all the main courses are $30 or less. I think dbBistro has the appropriate atmospherics, and while there are some mains in the high $20's, many more are in the $30's with the highest being $39. Similar situation with regard to pricing at one of our favorites, Oceana, which is perfect for a business dinner (if your group is into fish and seafood). So, if possible, you may want to re-think your budget.

      2. i'm ignoring your request to stay in midtown west, as the West Village is a quick train/cab ride away. i hosted a small business dinner at Empellon the other night and it could not have been better. with a party of six or so, I imagine you'd be seated in the back, which is quiet but still lively. it's a gorgeous space with interesting artwork and fantastic music - mostly 70's funk played at an audible level.

depending on how you order, many of the dishes promote conversation and activity, which i find helpful in business settings. service is professional, but not stuffy. food itself was dynamic, yet approachable. when dessert hit the table, everyone at the table simultaneously reached for their cameras.

the only negative - drinks could be stronger.
