Benchmark versus Palo Santo (Park Slope)
I'm looking to take a friend out for a birthday dinner on Wednesday. Because of time and transportation constraints, we have to stick pretty close to Park Slope. I am hoping for somewhere cozy for quiet conversation. I tried to call Convivium for a reservation but, alas, they are closed until Friday this week. So now I'm considering Benchmark or Palo Santo...
Would anyone out there care to share their opinion re: Benchmark or Palo Santo for a cozy, delicious birthday dinner? Or have other suggestions in/near the north Slope?? Thanks in advance.

Palo Santo fits the bill on cozy and delicious, and it's unique as compared to the other central/South American restaurants in Park Slope.
You might consider Rose Water a little farther up Union St., as it sounds like it would fit the bill. Rosewater has replaced Tempo as our go-to place when we're looking to have a nice dinner and not leave the Slope. It's usually easier to get a last minute reservation there than at Convivium or Applewood.
I've only had (a fairly unremarkable) brunch at Benchmark, so I'll leave it to others to comment on what the place is like at dinner.

Ah yes, Applewood. Why didn't I think of that? I just called and got a reservation there. Thanks for the reminder, jacobdev.

I haven't been to Palo Santo yet, though it's high on the list. Been to Benchmark once and can say that the NY Strip I had there was one of the best I've ever eaten. Excellent dry aged beef. The chef really knows his meat. That said it's probably a bit short on style and ambiance compared to Palo Santo. It depends on what you're in the mood for.
