Yummy Yummy Seafood Buffet Opens In El Monte

For me this might be the most exciting new food development of the year since there hasn't been a new authentic Chinese buffet restaurant opening in the SGV in a while. (Osaka Seafood replacing West Coast Seafood in Hacienda Heights does not count as being new.) Of course we're not talking gourmet food, and indeed Yummy Yummy isn't any better than places like Golden Coast in Alhambra or World Buffet in West Covina. However they do have some interesting stuff there, particularly the hand made dumplings. Today's dumplings were beef and celery dumplings and pork dumplings. Also they have the half foot long tomato fish roll which I've seen somewhere else (City Buffet in Oxnard maybe?), probably meant for people to break off segments, but I take an entire roll for myself. Crawfish, crab, whole steamed fish, and whole fish in black bean sauce are some of the other feature items. Yummy Yummy Seafood Buffet is located at 10632 Lower Azusa Road. This location was once the site of Super King Buffet, but it's been something else for the last four or five years, perhaps a Brazilian or Mexican restaurant.

Years and years ago there used to be a nice Asian buffet on Fullerton and Colima, I think Banana Bay is in their old space and across from that was a nice Korean buffet. Next time I need to eat too much food in that area, I'll check it out.

How does Yummy compare to World Buffet in West Covina? Which would you choose over the other?

Tossup, though I haven't been to World Buffet in a few months so my recollection isn't as clear.

Made return trip to World Buffet and several visits to Yummy Yummy. My conclusion is that Yummy Yummy is much better than World Buffet, and for my requirements not that far behind Osaka Seafood. Not to say that World Buffet is bad, as it is OK, but when the best dish is the egg foo young that's not a ringing endorsement. The Hawaiian shave ice is a nice touch, though.

Even taking into account that Osaka is a clear step down from the predecessor West Coast Seafood, it's quite a bit better than Yummy Yummy.

Of course, Yummy Yummy is also cheaper. $8.99 for weekday lunch, $12.99 for dinner and $13.99 for weekends. I do wonder how long they'll last, as business wasn't particularly robust at lunchtime yesterday.
