Macau style food in Los Angeles
Hi ,
I am looking for some Macau cuisine in LA, I am particularly looking for
Minchi , Macanese chilli prawns, shrimp and okra curry , African chicken etc., I am sure somebody on chowhound would have had the same craving satisfied. Please let me know.
thank you
Maybe someone can chime in on what the current status of the former Macau Street on Garvey is. They went out of business several years ago but the restaurant that took over had a different name but was essentially the same, and since that time they've got through a couple of incarnations. I've no idea if it's still currently serving Macau style dishes, but it's worth an inquiry.

The current occupant, H & H Restaurant, serves Sichuan style food and as far as I can tell is unrelated to Macau Kitchen, Hometown Kitchen or O T Kitchen. In a way I'm puzzled since the original Macau Kitchen did well enough to generate a second branch in Cerritos, but that one closed too.

From what I understand Big 3 in Alhambra on Main by Super A is called the New Macau Street in Chinese. I think there might be some connections there.

Has that even been confirmed? (I was in the Big 3 parking lot yesterday but before the Big 3 reference came up on this board. Otherwise I would have checked) Since there appears to be only one Portuguese restaurant in Los Angeles you really shouldn't expect more Macanese places.

That is Big 3's name in Chinese (Macau Street or 澳門街) but as far as Macau dishes, I've never seen any that were particular to that region, nor anything reminiscent of Macau Kitchen.

Took a closer look at the Big 3 menu and it's pretty standard Hong Kong style fare. Only thing obviously Macanese are the Macau style pork and the Macau egg tarts.

I was in Macau the other day, might need to cross over again from HK just to get more of the food in case I don't visit it again.

I just got back from Macau two days ago... the egg tarts are definitely central, but most of everything else seemed like anything else I could get in HK. I didn't notice too much portuguese influence in any of the restaurants I ate at. Pretty standard (some very good) Cantonese/HK-style food. Apparently I needed to do more research before I went! Shrimp and okra curry sounds great...
Those Portuguege egg tarts were fantastic though (called pastel de nata in portuguese). Wondering where they can be found in the southland?

Besides Big 3, posters have also reported them at Elite in Monterey Park.

If all one's looking for is Portuguese egg tart, the freshest/cheapest (and probably just best overall) is at Jim's Bakery in Monterey Park.
