Where's a good place to Fig out?

Berkeley Bowl had some really good turkey figs this week, a variety that usually is tasteless. These were plump, dead ripe and as sweet as a Mission fig. The Kadota were good as well.

I haven't found a good black Mission fig yet. Most seem hard and tasteless. Berkeley Bowl has some protected in egg-carton type plastic containers for $1.79. They are awful and totally devoid of flavor.

Where have you bought good figs or dishes made from fresh figs?

I, um, borrowed the title of this post from this 2003 article about a fig farm in Sonoma.

That particular farm doesn't have any yet and said the season is late. They do have a variety I haven't heard of before - "White Genoa (white skin, amber flesh"

  1. My son and I had some lovely candy stripe figs at the Main Farmers Market last week. I believe its a very short season so maybe today? $.75 a fig, 8 for $5.

      Saw them yesterday at Monterey Market at $7.95 a pound, much pricier than the brown turkey, kadota and adriatic.

      I've found delicious black Mission figs at Monterey Market for the last two or three weeks.

      1. Ram Das at the Berkeley Tuesday and Saturday markets has had good-looking figs lately. We have a tree so I never buy them myself.
