Great evening at Modern Barn in Armonk

We've been here quite a few times in the past year. Decised o go on a recent Sat night with 8 people. One of the couples had some off the menu requests and they could not have been more accomodating!Amazing service and delicious food- what could be better! It was crowded and lively as usual. It was such a great experience . Nice to see they haven't lost their luster and a pleasure to have a place like this in the area!

  1. Apples, what dishes would you recommend? I went once when they first opened and was underwhelmed, maybe it's time to give them another try.

Split an heirloom tomato salad and a chopped vegetable salad, both very good and I had a fish that was a special that night, I think it was a baronda and it was served with a vegetable risotto. I also ordered the broccoli rabe. My husband had the veal milanese, which he enjoyed. somone else had the chicken and the salmon and I dont recall the others. Everyone was happy though with what they had. For dessert we had a bunch for the table, creme brulee trio, peach crumble, cherry pie and some chocolate cake. Those were good not great.

We had that creme brulee trio too. It was great. All the food was very good - I posted what we had in another thread. I actually had the pesto pizza - loved it.

winecountrygirl and apples, this sounds very tempting. I'm gonna give it another shot.

debmom, I am with you. But, we'd be willing to try it again. Curious to know what diners think is "good" or really worth trying.

Sounds like they got their act together, I'm gonna give it another try, too!

      3. We had a wonderful meal there last week as well.

we've eaten there 4-5 times, meal has been good, service has been good, one negative is place is very noisy north and modern barn opened up at same time apprx all the hype went to north, now that the hype is over, north is mediocre at best, and modern has stayed strong, interesting how press and hype cane so off target, but not unusual, you can pay $$$ for hype, you can't pay $$ for the kitchen to be on target lol

            1. re: intrepid

Can't say I agree about North being "mediocre at best". While I have not been to Modern Barn, I've had 4-5 terrific meals at North - I find the food to be consistently fresh, well-prepared, and overall delicious.

've yet to go to Modern Barn because to me, the menu seems to plain. That being said, given the positive feedback, I'm interested in giving it a try.

If you had been to North this last Friday night you would feel differently.

I am really sad to read all this about North b/c I really love it, but definitely wonder what the deal is after reading the most recent posts/theads about people's experiences. However, I just said to The Husband that I think Moderne Barn sounds better and more interesting than I had originally thought after our 1st, disappointing dinner there.

                  1. re: MRS

MRS - I believe you are the reason I tried the porchetta at North and I did love it the first time. I too had a feeling about Moderne Barn - that the menu looked uninspired and diner-ish. However, we were so pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and service. That said, we've only been there once so hopefully it will be as good the next time!

          1. We went to Moderne Barn this weekend for the first time. Overall, we thought it was good, not great. We sat upstairs and when we arrived at 7, it was not too loud but as it filled up, the place became very loud.

We were with 8 people so we all got to try a few things. My friend ordered the clam flatbread pizza which was very tasty. I had a caesar salad and tasted another friend's beet salad. Both salads were good, though the croutons on the caesar were soggy. Somebody ordered the hot dog so I got a taste of that too...that was delicious. My husband ordered the tiger shrimp appetizer...he seemed happy, though I did not taste it.

For a main, I ordered the Ricotta Gnudi. It was not bad, but pretty much had no taste at all. I would not order it again. One friend ordered the eggplant parmesan, which was fine, nothing special. Two at our table ordered the seafood risotto and they seemed to like it, but I didn't taste it, so not sure how good it actually was.

I had some of the polenta, which I liked, and the mac and cheese, which was bland.

For dessert, some of us shared the Chocolate Hazelnut Torte with vanilla ice cream. That was very good.

Overall, a good vibe, though a little loud. I would go back if friends wanted to go, but I wouldn't exactly rush back.

Valerie- I have to agree with about not rushing back to Moderne. Last month, 8 of us went to dinner and while nothing was bad necessarily, nothing was SO great either. It was food. My husband said he has no desire to return at all. And, we continue to enjoy our dinners at North. Things are really, really good there again!!!

Ok, maybe North is worth another shot. Last time I was so utterly disappointed though......
