Apple Picking Not Too Far From Newton

johndory Sep 8, 2011 07:41 PM

I usually trek up to Russell Orchard for apple picking but I'm interested in options that are closer to Newton this year. I'm not looking for a circus (i.e., no need for hay mazes, pony rides, etc.), just some good apples and, ideally, donuts. How is Dowse Orchard in Sherborn?

I never picked at Dowses but bought them there a lot when younger and they were always good. They have really good write ups on the thread here from 2009{the one that says'apple picking close to boston not like Disney'}. THere were lots of suggestions. Brooksby Farm in Peabody is the closest. Its very no frills, with small store a variety of apples. I usually go late for the Empires and Macouns. The sweetness varies year to year but they are usually pretty good. The cider donuts are good too if you get them hot, which they commonly are.. Also, i dont know if they have picking but i got great apples and donuts at a small place in West Newbury but cant think of the name..Just go to the Newburyport exit and go the opposite direction a few miles on the right.

There are a couple of good orchards around 495, I like shelburn farms as well as carlson, havent been to dowse in a long time, but I did love the apple crisp.

last year about this time there was a thread that had a list of all the pyo places in ma, you should be able to search for it.

Lookout farms charges you not only for the apples but entrance admision $8 m-f, $14 sat sun holidays, $2.50 /lb, but it is close.
