Default icon/avatar changed from person to fork and knife

K K Sep 8, 2011 04:37 PM

Is this a permanent change?

Can I change it to pair of chopsticks?

And at the same time my "saved boards" went missing from my profile page. Any connection between the two events?

The old blue man avatars just reappeared and at the very same moment the "saved boards" showed up on my profile page again. Definitely one linked to the other I would have to think.

afaik u can change your avatar to anything u want as long it doesnt violate tos....

but the knife and fork are better than the little silhouette..

Heheh! To me the red fork and knife looks like the symbols on tourist maps for where to eat. When I see it next to a poster's name, I'm programmed to think I'm looking at the name of a restaurant, not a diner/chowhound.

ditto here...and I find i quite jarring and a bit ugly, actually. fortunately not an issue for me with my non-avatar.....

As noted below by Engineering, it's back. Sorry to see it. I feel the red color is a poor design choice, drawing the eye to a generic logo for an eating establishment.

Agree, it is harsh. The little blue man was at least softer, and I pretended it was an obliquely viewed wine glass.

maybe they are trying to get more of us lazy types, such as myself, to plug in a proper avatar, so as to not have to see a map-marker next to our own handles, at the foot of our own posts. where the hell is my camera?

not to mention that is the restaurant symbol on google maps - we are not restaruants, we are eaters!

At the risk of stating the obvious, this is back in place as intended. And yes, it is meant as the default avatar going forward, though you can change it to whatever you wish.

My profile page is again without my saved boards. Just like last time the little knife and fork avatar went up. I never did receive any sort of reply about my suspicion that the two are somehow linked. And now it has happened again. That is a MIGHTY big COINCIDENCE if you ask me.

The two are linked only inasmuch as they were bundled in the same batch of changes. The profile page change snuck back in; I'll look into restoring it presently. Our apologies for the oversight, we'll be fixing it as soon as possible.

"The two are linked only inasmuch as they were bundled in the same batch of changes."

Am I to take that as you all planned to eliminate the saved boards from my profile page and the change "took" as intended? (g) My only "real" comment would be regarding the fact that you already had one real world example of this happening the first time you all changed from blue man to knife and fork. How could it happen again that the saved boards glitch cropped back up, (falling under the "those that fail to learn from history" adage file...)?

To make a long story short, the first time it happened we reversed all of the updates wholesale, and in the resulting confusion no one thought to remove the profile page change prior to yesterday's release.

Also: though the Engineering team is typically not involved in policy / design decisions, I can at least confirm that this profile page change was recanted and is not meant to go out at all.

Our sincere apologies, and thank you as always for your patience.

In all seriousness one of the VERY best changes that the "modern" CH site has made is the transparent and almost immediate acknowledgment (and updates) by Engineering of reports of trouble. I know I'm not alone in thanking the powers that be for making that happen and for you and all the other folks in the backroom who clear up the issues that arise. So thanks for all you do... (I now sound like a beer ad I know)

i love the engineering updates, mainly because i think engineering's avatar is effing hilarious :)

Thanks. Now back to normal with saved boards showing.
