Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Where should I take my Grandfather on Friday?

My Grandfather is coming to NYC and we are having dinner on Friday night. I'm at a loss for where to take him. He really appreciates good food, but nothing terribly extravagant (thinks it is very wasteful). the places i usually frequent are really nothing special so i'm looking for the perfect in-between place that has quality food, nice setting, but reasonable. There is no need for it to be trendy or cool or anything like that.

Also there are some limits, No French, Asian, Italian or anything too spicy that might make him sick.

Thoughts?

  1. What is your budget and what types of food does he like?

    1. How about steak? Le Relais de Venise L'Entrecote is fun, comfortable, and reasonable. Yes, it's French, but they only serve steak (with salad and frites). Set menu $25.

      1. He has a pretty wide range of taste, loves steak, but eats it all the time. Probably looking for something in the $35-$50 range per person, with some flexibility. Something Continental or an ethnic type food that doesn't use harsh spices.
        Thanks

Just to clarify, $35-50pp before tax, tip, wine/drinks? It's easier for us to make recommendations if you're giving a cost for food only.

right, I meant after tip and tax, but not including wine/drinks

If the $50pp is supposed to cover tip and tax, then it's about $38 for food, correct?

Maybe somewhere like Hundred Acres? I see availability for tomorrow night for 2 people on OpenTable right now.

I think, but maybe it's just me, that Hundred Acres tries too hard to be hip. We were very unhappy with a recent visit. How about Public or August? Maybe pushing the budget a little but great places.
