One night in san Fran - where to go
Hubby and I are spending one night - tonight - in San Fran. Our favorite city. Wish we had more time, but I digress. Staying about a block off Union Sq. Looking for dinner restaurant that we can walk to - casual, good food. Nothing glitzy or touristy please. Willing to hoof it a fair way. Any interesting suggestions would be most appreciated. We are adventuresome eaters. Thanks!

I second SPQR. I wouldn't consider it glitzy or touristy at all. It's a casual neighborhood restaurant that doesn't get the attention it deserves and is really reasonably priced. It's easily my favorite Italian restaurant in SF. But you can't walk here...worth a cab though!
Cafe claude is in walking distance and has very solid french food. It's right across the alley of Gitane, which is excellent for cocktails and owned by the same people.

Lers Ros. Stay on Geary while walking over to Larkin.

re: Robert Lauriston
I would, frankly, be disappointed if the only meal I ate in SF was at Lers Ros. I think the menu takes some getting used to, and I'm not sure I've conquered it yet (2 meals so far). A visitor might get pushed into ordering the ostrich or something, which I suspect isn't a prime wow experience.
