Souffle dish question

Does the big rim on this souffle dish serve a purpose, or is it just drama?

There would be no way to attach a "collar", would there?

I don't know it's true purpose, but it looks like something to actually grab on toif you had it in a water bath or something. I sometimes use little ramekins and have a lot of trouble getting them out of the hot water and would love a bit of a rim.
