Fantasize No More. LQ's Legendary Cheese Cart is Back!

Got the following good news in the mail today. A welcome development for some of us cheese lovers here in LA....

LQ@ Starry Kitchen

"Our unpasteurized cheeses are being shipped directly from France and we will have 25-30 options for you to choose from. Cheese service will be available during both seatings and for walk-ins. We will be inviting diners from the first seating to indulge in their cheeses on our patio, where we will have tables setup for you. You can choose 3, 5, 7 or even 25 cheeses. No amount of cheese is too little...or too much.

3 cheeses - $12
5 cheeses - $20
7 cheeses - $28

$3 for each additional cheese
$2 extra for truffle honey

If you're in the mood for just a cheese plate, feel free to stop in during dinner hours! The cheese cart will be available on the patio throughout dinner for walk-ins."

  1. since they got no liquor license, does that mean BYOW for while cheesing it??

Even better. BYO with no corkage fee.

      1. re: Porthos

A+, might need to make a stop to this patio. Damn recession. Hopefully he'll stay @ SK through October.

    2. YES! YES! YES! Thank goodness for this because I was underwhelmed with my experiences at Fig. Porthos, did you find this out via LQ's mailing list or Starry Kitchen's? I needs to get on that pronto!

Yes, LQ's mailing list. Thanks for taking the hit at Fig. See you at SK's patio!

        2. Popped in for the 7 cheese plate last night; it was lovely. A tear came to my eye when the cart was rolled over, it was so beautiful. They had about 38 cheeses yesterday(Epoisses was available and eaten by me). Sleeper hit was the Abbaye de Tamie, just great.

People, we need to do something to get Chef Laurent a permanent place where we can have this cart available consistently and easily!

Hilarious! I managed to coerce a friend into dropping by also. She mentioned that they were out of Comte which is a shame but just means some cheese vultures other than us have been at it.

They are talking about a permanent location but looking into locations north of downtown which may be a back breaker for us OC denizens.

            1. re: Porthos

Werd. Cuz eating cheese in that concrete corporate jungle is not my idea of a leisurely time.

How about just a lovely garden somewhere? For cheese eaters? Kinda like Beverly Hills Cheese store, but with that beast of a cheese cart + seating? And an affineur sporting cool cuff-links?

              1. re: TonyC

I for one would not want to see the associated 5-10x increase in price for such accoutrements.

Let's try to keep good food cheap for once shall we?

                  1. re: Porthos

Cheese cart pricing didn't change between BLQ & LQ/SK.

                    1. re: TonyC

TonyC. Put it in a garden somewhere or in Beverly Hills and add said affineur wth cuff-links and it will change.

Mc Michael. Got that e-mail...deleted it. Then decided to post it on the boards (surprised it wasn't already) once I saw your reply to ensure that phone line crashes tomorrow.

                  2. re: TonyC

Sure, I'm replying to myself but...
                    http://blogs.laweekly.com/squidink/20...

LQ cheese cart walks to DomaineLA (not quite Beverly Hills, but still Hollywood?), prices UNCHANGED.
                    http://domaine547.com/store/index.php...

                    $12/3 cheese + $13 for 3 wines = $25. $20 if you prepay.

No cuff-links yet, but listening to LQ talk about shopping at 168 Market is always glorious.

                    1. re: TonyC

maybe i missed it somewhere, and if so, i apologize, but any chance this fellow is going to open a, y'know, restaurant any time soon?
this pop up thing is for the birds.

                      1. re: linus

based on his track record of opening restaurants, you must ask - why?

                        1. re: ns1

i'm not quite sure what you're asking or to whom.
there are people here who know oodles more than i do about the restaurant business and lq who could probably answer why one of the most acclaimed chefs in one of the major cities of the earth can't seem to hold down a "regular" restaurant gig.
i suppose one short answer is, the economy, stupid. maybe another is, he likes it this way.
me, i don't like having to speed dial a reservation number like it's 1979 and i'm calling some radio station trying to be the 14th caller and win ramones tickets or some boone's farm.
do i want to eat this gentleman's food? yes. are there hoops i won't jump through to do it? yes. i admit, that's on me.
hence, i wonder if a regular-type restaurant is in the future.
it's the same b.s. with ludo. are there guys like this in new york, chicago, san francisco?

                          1. re: linus

if i had 3-4 failed fixed location restaurants and my pop-up was doing pretty damn well, i'd probably stay out of the fixed location restaurant business and stay in the pop-up business.

This never applied to BistroLQ and certainly doesn't apply to LQ@SK. Just go to the website and send an online reservation request for the date and time you're interested.

                              Ludo this is not.

                              It's way better.

                              1. re: linus

When we asked Laurent this 2-3 months ago he mentioned that he is planning to open a restaurant in 2012. Hopefully his involvement in Top Chef will help him to secure some financial support.

                      2. re: Porthos

We took a good chunk of that Comte which was my 2nd favorite of the night. Mwahaha!

I certainly hope he doesn't go too far north of DT. DT is about as far as I want to go anyways as a South Bay resident....

                        1. re: baloney

It was YOU! Should have known...how many months was it btw? Did you get a chance to try the Bristol Farms one?

                          1. re: Porthos

No, I don't go to LB often so I haven't had the chance to go to that BF yet. I really need to since our BF doesn't change up their cheeses and the selection ain't great to begin with.

The Comte was 24 months and just as good as some 36's I've had in Paris.

                            1. re: baloney

had some 30 month comte at Fig tonight.

                          2. re: baloney

you're a better person than i regarding driving.
i won't go downtown anymore, even on a bet.
it's no pleasure to me to have a couple of glasses of wine and then have to drive back to Playa del Rey.
the last time i tried it, it was 9pm, the 110 was stopped, and when i got off the freeway to take venice blvd west, as it turned out they were filming a movie on the streets so, the streets, too were stoppped.

i will, however, go to monterey park on the weekends in the middle of the day for Happy Family.. . . . .

                            1. re: westsidegal

Luckily, I can take the 110(and there usually aren't too many issues even at night, you probably hit an unlucky night) all the way to the end and not have to take fwys west. If I had to take the 10 or 405, I would probably be in your boat and avoid DT and north!

I rarely make it to the valley, weekends or not, I desperately desperately need to be craving Chinese to suffer through that drive.

                        2. re: baloney

                          Can one just "Pop in?"
I thought that you had to reserve way in advance for LQ@SK, no?

                          1. re: Ciao Bob

pop in for cheese cart on patio, no rez required for that.

                        3. Went Sunday night and had a blast. All the cheeses were great and a point. Happy to skip the garden, it was a fun atmosphere.
