Soup Downtown

I am looking for good, hearty, soul-warming soups for this week especially in light of the constant showers. Places that deliver downtown would be ideal, although I could be convinced to venture out into the rain for a really good bowl of soup.

I like the gumbo at DC Coast, and am looking for other places - either high end or low end that have soup (either clear as day broth or thick, rich stews). Help a sick chowhounder out, will ya?

  1. One of my favorite wet-and-chilly weather soups is "house special soup" that's served by most Chinese carryouts. It's just clear broth with shredded vegetables and meat. A kind of chop suey of soups. Very simple. Very filling. Throw some white rice in it to make a nourishing gruel.

Another cold weather soup I enjoy is French onion, with some nice gruyere toasted on top. Montmartre in Eastern Market does a good one.

    1. Have you looked into The Soupergirl's offerings? I believe they deliver around DC.

Do you have a link? I remember hearing about them...

www.soupergirl.com. They actually have a store: 314 Carroll Street, NW – right next to Mayorga Coffee.

        2. Chef Gray at Equinox makes excellent soups. You can grab lunch at the bar or sit in the dining room. This weather makes me crave his chestnut soup but I think I'll have to wait a few more months for that.

          1. in Chinatown the shrimp and pork dumpling soup at Full Kee or the pho around the corner at an even dumpier takeout place called Cafe/Deli Viet/Thai are pretty good.

            1. I also really like the vegetarian dumpling soup at Ping Pong Dim Sum. In fact besides the cocktails it's one of the few things I actually enjoy at that restaurant. But it's a delicious soup----perfect if you are sick because it has lemongrass in it.

              1. Zoup (located near McPherson Square) is actually pretty good. I wasn't a fan of the seafood soups I tried (YMMV), but I've enjoyed every other soup I've tried from there. It's a casual chain restaurant, so nothing special, but I've been more than satisfied.
