Best / Worst things to eat in Marina / Cow Hollow.

I'm looking for specific dishes that are done pretty well, or really poorly in Marina / Cow Hollow, primarily in comparison to the best one can find other parts of the city. Primarily from the perspective of a foodie who lives in the marina and is asking, "is it worth the trip"?

My list would be:

excellent::

A16 - pizzas and the chocolate budino
betelnut - "shiu jia" dumplings
chilayo - mole enchilada and homemade salsas
lucca - sandwiches, potato salad, hard boiled eggs
suzie cakes - cakes and puddings
ristobar - homemade pastas

decent:

tacolicious - tacos at
cafe de amis - burger
luisa's - osso bucco
luisa's - bolognese
e'angelo - lasagna
zushi puzza - sushi
la canasta - tacos

tolerable:

lobster roll at tacko

terrible:

umami - sushi
nettie's crab shack -- lobster roll -- not enough lobster
betelnut - "little dragon" dumplings -- a lazy, nasty version of XLB
la canasta - vegetarian burrito -- too moist

Any other suggestions?

  1. Next time you are at tacolicious try the chocolate pudding with olive oil made famous by Laiola. Pretty much everything at Bistro Aix is solid but not exciting.

All of the grilled cheeses I've had at Blue Barn Gourmet have been good, but the Sheep is exceptional, imo. Their salads are also excellent, but I don't order any of the named salads, I'm a custom sorta guy.

    1. Mezes (Greek) is good.

      1. Assuming it is still being offered, the $21 prime rib special on Monday & Tuesday nites at the Brazen Head would at least rate a "decent."

honestly, inconsistent. Once good, once cold with almost no jus. We ate the same time each occasion.

        2. Please don't forget Delarosa which has some amazing pizzas, cocktails, desserts, and a killer staff.

Delarosa is indeed a very friendly place with very well-priced, tasty items.

          2. Some highlights in the Marina...

            Chotto-the ramen (considering the neighborhood)
            Tacko-fish tacos
            Roam-burgers

            Most overrated...

Marina Submarine (not Marina Deli they are better) yes, confusing.
            Gamine-burger

            Dirty little secret-
            Pacific Catch-fried oysters
            Boboquivari's-bone in filet mignon

                1. So far most of this list is decent dishes if you live in the neighborhood. Not many that would make me drive across town and look for parking though.

What rises to the top for me: A16, Atelier Crenn, Mezes, and it sound like I should check out Tipsy Pig and maybe Delarosa.

(Versus say Polk Street or nearby Van Ness, where I can think of a handful of destination worthy places right away. Even if Dustin claims the people are better looking or better dressed in his part of town :)

                  1. Avoid the veggie burger from Roam Artisan Burgers, but do indulge in their fry-freca (spelling is wrong). The vanilla milkshake is good too.

I'm not a fan of Susiecakes. Too sweet.

                    1. all excellent:

nettie's crab shack -- crab roll, vegan soup -- just delicious.
cafe de amis -- grilled dorade
bistro aix -- duck with lentils and chicken with pasta
tipsy pig -- mac + cheese w/ smoked bacon

                      decent:

tipsy pig -- fish + chips

                      tolerable:

                      tipsy pig -- ribs

                      terrible:

nettie's crab shack -- overly sweet, undrinkable cocktail

though probably wouldn't say any of these are worth driving across town for ... unless of course you're going for the well-dressed good-looking people :-)

                      1. Great thread. Wondering if you or anyone else who's been back to Ristobar under the new chef can comment on any changes.
