Going to The Modern tonight for our first anniversary!... any recent reports?

After reading these boards for too many hours every day my husband and I chose to go to The Modern for our first wedding anniversary (we were supposed to go last Saturday but Irene ruined our plans, so we were able to push our reservation back to tonight)! We are planning to do the tasting menu since my husband swooned when he saw the tasting menu that they have on their website, but I just wanted to get some opinions. Has anyone been recently enough that they have an idea about what is on the tasting menu now? Is the tasting menu the best way to go at The Modern, or do people recommend going a la carte? We eat pretty much everything, so I'm not concerned about there being something on the tasting menu that we would be afraid to try.

We are graduate students so we don't get to eat like this all the time, but we save up our money to have big birthday dinners and a big anniversary dinner every year, so we do have some experience with tasting menus. In the past we have done WD-50, Le Bernardin (the night we got engaged), Morimoto, and Aquavit (I'm saving EMP for my birthday choice).

Thanks so much!

We were there fairly recent and we went with the regular menu because there were more things that appealed to us and we wanted to try different things but the tasting may be more what you like. If you go regular menu I can say the King Crab Cannelloni, the Viaolne Risotto, the lobster, were excellent. Since it is a special occassion ask to be seated on a two top along the glass wall center of the windows and ask to have drinks out on the patio before your dinner, the weather should be perfect for it.

I was there 3 weeks ago for dinner. Didn't do the tasting menu. We really enjoyed the Tuna and Scallop Tartare, the Wagyu and Foie Gras Damier, the Hamachi and Sea Urchin Tart, and the Grilled Foie Gras. For dessert, I really liked the Caramel Parfait. The Dacquoise was also good if you enjoyed rich desserts. It was like a giant Ferrero Rocher.

We got the Chorizo-Crusted Cod and Duck Breast for our mains, but I wasn't a fan of either. The cod tasted too salty due to the chorizo (this might be personal preference though). The duck was overcooked and a bit tough.

If you each order different dishes on the prix-fixe menu, you can share and get to taste 8 dishes for much less than the cost of the tasting menu.

This is what I posted on a recent CH thread:

"The standout dishes were the Damier, the sturgeon and sauerkraut tart, hamachi and sea urchin tart, veal tenderloin, poussin breast and baba au rhum, but really every dish we had was excellent, and as always the presentation of each dish was stunning."
