Darryl's Corner Bar

I had a lovely dinner with my DSM and daughter. She moved into her dorm and we walked down. Our waiter Tyrone made the night. The setting is very cool, very chic. I can imagine later in the night, the bar is hopping. We arrived 6:15 and were offered half price apps. Tyrone recommend the peach chile BBQ wings. I tried one it was divine. I had the gumbo and my DSM had the jambalaya. My kiddo had the pulled pork sandwich. We had a side of mac and cheese and green beans. Everything was very tasted, well executed and portion wise, just right. We had a slice of red velvet cake which was a slim slice but VERY dense. We did not love it. I had two wines and my DSM had a Red Stripe. The bill was 100+ before tip. We will go back. A fun spot.

I'm a fan of Darryl's, a good little neighborhood spot for drinks and live jazz, but I can't say I think the food is extraordinary for the money, and it already feels like it has declined some since its opening months. Feels like some corner-cutting in the details, like weak french fries.

The options nearby on the west side of Mass Ave are rather more limited. In the general neighborhood, my favorite is probably Ali's Roti. Another Brian Poe-helmed place is coming soon, to be called Poe's Chester Square Pub, which I'm hopeful about. Parish Cafe down the block is okay, if a bit pricey for what it is. Up the block east of Mass Ave, I like Petit Robert, House of Siam (not as traditional as I prefer, but passable), and Columbus Cafe. Decent, modest Ethiopian food, and a great traditional coffee ceremony, can be had at Lucy's around the corner on Mass Ave near Huntington. A few blocks further over on Shawmut, I'm quite fond of Orinoco and have had solid early experiences at El Centro.

I haven't had the food at Darryl's, but a couple of months ago sat at a table in the bar and shared a bottle of wine with my husband. We thought the food looked really good. They have live jazz in the evenings, and the trio we saw was terrific. Service was super friendly, too. We'll definitely return.
