Sunday in Lisbon

Hi all
I arrive in Lisbon at 6 am on a Sunday in 2 weeks.
I'm hoping to get an early check-in at my hotel... but I would also like to eat at some time! Are there any places you can recommend that are open on Sunday for dinner?
Also I'll be wandering around the old part of town during the day-I'm hoping to find at least some things open and a place to have coffee, pastries, lunch.... I hope everything is not closed!
and I love grilled sardines.... I hope i will be able to find some!
Thanks-as usual!
Missy

This post from Vinhotinto is still accurate: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/734641
Traditionally sardines are a lunchtime treat, as they have to be fresh from the sea, and not at their best on Sundays as the fishermen don't go out fishing and teh markets are closed... Pastelerias and cafés will be open on Sunday, do not worry, one does not starve in Lisbon, even on Sundays.
BTW where will you be staying?

oh sorry-it's been a long holiday here in the US. Anyway, thanks-I will be staying at the Hotel Lisboa Plaza-and traveling to the congress center by the sea for a few days.
      Thank you again!

Lovely hotel, well chosen. You will probably be tired by dinner time, so I would just walk up the avenue (Liberdade) and have dinner at the Brasserie Flo in the Tivoli: http://www.tivolihotels.com/Default.aspx?ID=424

Otherwise, walk down the avenue to Gambrinus for a taste of old fashion Lisbon: http://www.gambrinuslisboa.com/index.php.

          monchique,

how hard/easy is it for a traveler with absolutely no portuguese language skills and rudimentary spanish to communicate with waiters in general in lisbon?

Because I am blonde and tall, I am automatically addressed in English by waiters, which ennoys me tremendously because a) I am French, and b) speak quite good Portuguese after living here 35 years...
However, the answer is extremely easy! French works well too in Lisbon.
