Do you sing while cooking?

For some reason, I sing bits of opera when I cook, whatever I'm cooking. Maybe I like the drama and passion . . .

Do you sing while you cook? If so, what do you like to sing?

  1. I find myself humming whatever tune is caught in my brain. Sometimes I hum the same phrase over and over again, driving myself nuts.

Me too. I pretty much have an earworm of some song or another all my waking hours. Sometimes it's a song I know all of and sometimes it just a line and I don't know the rest.

@sueatmo and Sooeygun, we're wired similarly! Whenever ciabatta crosses my mind (god forbid I make a strata, then it's with me for HOURS), I cannot get this one out of my head--chi-baba, chi-baba, Chihuahua!

Less cooking-related, more a life condition...words or phrases always bring songs to mind. It tends to keep me smilin'. So may I haunt you and others with Peggy Lee next time you think of ciabatta! :P

Another version for those who don't sing, but like to shake their hips. Courtesy of Santana.

      2. I sing (badly), I dance (even worse), and I generally goof around (but never with knives). I really enjoy cooking.

        1. I sing all the time, whatever I'm doing! I did sing opera in college, so I do a bit of that still. I have small children at home, so we often are all singing some kid song or other, and I let them help in the kitchen whenever possible. And then, sometimes a little R&B or gospel when I feel like dancing too, although that can be a little difficult to do during some recipes lol.

          1. When I sing while I cook the drain clogs.

Had to google him. Recognized the name, but didn't attach it to the Righteous Brothers at first. Yes. That is a voice that would clear drain clogs, I think...

            1. I put the radio on while cooking a big meal, like Sunday dinner or Thanksgiving dinner and I sing pretty loudly to whatever is on.
If I'm just quickly whipping up something on a weeknight, I usually sing the Star Spangled Banner or something by Janis Joplin.

Busted flat in Baton Rouge, with the rockets red glare....

Last night I made chicken and was singing Mother's Little Helper by the Rolling Stones. DH says that was surreal/

                  1. re: iluvcookies

Ha! Love that last one. I'll have to try Mother's Little Helper when DH is around.

                    1. re: three of us

Works best when making instant cake and frozen steak :)

              2. Usually Trop-Rock (Jimmy Buffett,, Mark McGuire, The Boat Drunks) or show tunes (Les Miserables, Cats, Phantom Of The Opera).

                1. I drum while cooking...does that count....drum set is in the great room and while waiting for things to cook, I'm jamming to blues/old school R&B and mostly 70's rock..
I love to listen to Opera really loud while cooking Italian.

                  1. The other day I caught myself singing "Poker Face" while making dinner.

                    1. I think on balance, I probably dance while cooking more than I sing, but I do sing from time to time. Ella, Sade, Sting, Gipsy Kings, Buena Vista Social Club, old school R&B - Whatever I'm listening to at the time.

yeah, now that I am living alone, I have the freedom to blast the radio and sing at the top of my lungs!
and dance around a bit...It's very liberating!

                        1. re: inaplasticcup

Gipsy Kings - I often play their double CD when I'm prepping and cooking.

                        2. I sing all time when I'm cooking. It drives my son nuts. The other day, I was stirring and singing away, when he came into the kitchen and asked, "Hey mom, who sings that?"
I answered, "Rihanna." He said, "Good. Let's keep it that way."

I remember that joke from when I was a teenager. I used to love to pull it on my older sisters. Good to know it's still appreciated by the youngsters of today.

                            2. My favorite, while cooking is...

Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention's "Call Any Vegetable"

                              Call any vegetable
                              (Call any vegetable)
                              Call it by name
                              (Call any vegetable)
                              Call one today
                              (Call any vegetable)
When you get off the train
                              (Call any vegetable)
                              Call any vegetable
                              And the chances are good
                              Ooooh! The vegetable

From Zappa's Joe's garage: Turn it down! Turn it down! Don't you boys know any nice songs?

                                1. re: Rmis32

I hope you bake, too, 'cause you can bridge directly from that to "The Muffin Man"...and don't think this one doesn't cross my mind on the rare occasion I bake them!

                                  RIP, Frank!
"Some people like cupcakes better, I, for one, care less for them!" :P

                                2. Actually, I catch myself whistling, which I immediately stop. It's a bad habit to blow onto people's food when cooking or plating.

                                  1. Adele and I have been serenading my Eva Diva while I cook as of late. I'm hoping to get mamachef to dance in the background. ;)

Adele has been my life soundtrack this summer. In the kitchen, at the grill, on the sofa, in bed. Love her.

                                    2. Only alone in the house, and the windows are closed.

                                      1. Love this question. I sing more when I wash dishes than when I cook, and it's usually something folky like Joni Mitchell.

                                        1. Not a chance. If I were to sing while I was cooking, I'd totally botch the job (cooking, that is). I need to (and like to) focus totally on the task at hand (that's the ADD kicking in). I find it much more relaxing that way. Plus my singing voice is enough to put anyone off their dinner. But I do like to listen to music while I eat!

                                          1. I'm weird. I do sing while cooking at times, but it is themed and I sing along to CD's. When I cook Italian, I listen to the soundtrack of "Big Night" and sing along. When I make gumbo, I put on the Cajun music and after I make my roux (I don't move while making my roux), I dance around. When I make French food, I listen to the 'Amelie" soundtrack and listen to a bunch of french CD's. My favorite song to sing along to is "Boum"--the song is a great cooking song and always makes me happy:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0KWyW...
