Auslese Riesling - pairings?

Last night I opened a 2003 August Kesseler Rudesheimer Bischofsberg Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel, and it was extraordinary.

I had Thai - red curry and basil chicken - a pretty standard choice for me when drinking Riesling.

But this wine was so amazing, that I couldn't help but think I wasn't doing it any favors by drinking it with my humdrum curry. A Kabinet would have probably been a better choice (the usual choice too) but I really wanted to try this bottle.

I'm glad I did, but what would have been a better pairing for this extraordinary bottle?

Auslese rieslings can be quite variable, but I think you're right on the mark. I love Thai, Vietnamese ... really all southeast/south asian cuisine. I'd put it to you that these are far superior food cultures to Germany or Austria. My discovery of how wonderful wines like Rieslings or Chenins with a little or a lot of RS go with this food was one of my most memorable eureka moments. West meets East, creating a true fusion without altering or diminishing either.

My suggestion would be to find the best such place in town and replace that humdrum curry with a mindblowing melange of hot-sour-salty-sweet. Why mess with perfection?
