Different place, but saw this in the paper this morning.
New izakaya: Berkeley's venerable Joshu-ya Sushi Bar has gotten a face-lift in more ways than one. The freshly remodeled restaurant is now Joshu-ya Brasserie, with a new izakaya vibe and modern Japanese menu crafted by chef-owner Jason Kwon. The 27-year-old chef says, "Diners who think that they know Joshu-ya need to think again." Gone are the vinyl tablecloths and fusty carpets. It's all bamboo, dark woods and clean lines indoors, with outdoor seating under bistro umbrellas. As for the menu, think fresh farmed oysters, cured salmon with Asian pear and truffle-creme, seared Hokkaido scallops, braised short rib sukiyaki and an omakase sushi option. Open 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, and 5-10 p.m. daily.
