"from our partners at snooth" -- what do our resident wine experts think of this linked site? [moved from Wine board]

hello wine board denizens,

i've just noticed the links to various articles on this wine site, listed at the bottom of all chowhound pages:

>>recipes >>stories >>videos >>from our partners at snooth

the links appear to have replaced the, er, "hot post sampler" selection, for lack of a better descriptor, and i can't actually remember what the heading was.

anyway, i followed the link and read one article. i don't really have a strong impression one way or another, but i'm curious about what the always knowledgeable and opinionated minds here are thinking about this "snooth" site.

  1. I was really put off at first having to wait for an *invitation* to join what my previous experience with Herr Snooth had produced. After being graced with "accecptance" into the fold my uderwhelvement was greatly magnified. When, after being granted access to the noble quarters, I became quite leery of their short sale shipments "only available for the next 3 hours" to portions of the country that are experiencing, shall we say, HEAT WAVES?

    The only thing that even draws my attention to this shill operation is that Ron Washam has signed on as ? quality control. Ron has earned my complete devotion as to the search for the finest wines (not related to price, BTW), but until winter comes AND I see Snooth come around, I'm not holding my breath.



    PS Ron, wish you would revitalize the Hose Master .... Oh shit, wait, you did....

      Ron is an otherwise bright note in the gloom of dark doors and black holes . . . .

          look down, Bill-- toward the bottom right of this (or any) chowhound thread or board.

          there is the list of wine board discussions, and then, (above the red bottom header thingy and above the pictures that link to features and articles) there are four columns with headers. the fourth one, on your right, is "from our partners at snooth." it is a gray header, on my screen at least.

          it isn't an ad, it's a linked site through CHOW.

        This came out in January:

        The offending 'scrapings' were removed from Snooth and apologies were offered...

        But when they were discovered doing this in 2007 and said they would stop, but they did it again anyway?

        Not cool.

        1. Snooth sucks. Period. Useless bottomfeeders. Never offered anything useful, even when trying to steal content.

          Yup, as Cookiefiend notes, they were busted for scraping data from a truly wonderful and informational site, Cellartracker. Here's more on that:

            I'm on Snooth. Does that make me a uselss bottomfeeder?

            I have hundreds of posts on Snooth, and have educated (and been educated by) many others who post. To cast such a wide net is nothing short of offensive. There are plenty of folks over at Snooth who know as much, if not way more, about wine as you.

              Just to be clear invino... I called "Snooth" a useless bottomfeeder. I had no idea there were actually "snoothers". Feel free to take offense, but there was none intended.

              And I stand by what I said about Snooth. Snooth stole content from a site I regularly contribute to and rely on, a site which was built as a labor of love. Snooth tried to change it just enough to cover up their theft, and then tried to use that to grow their business. And at least for awhile, they ended up at the top of any wine-related search results due to their gaming of Google and despite the fact that they were basically a shell with no content. Any cross-promotional partnership with that site cheapens this one.

              In fact, consider this my last post here. After thinking this over, I don't want to belong to any site that partners with THAT one.

                a) Snooth sucks, and this is coming from someone who knows a number of people who write their articles;

                b) never trust *completely* the information one gets from a site that is ALSO trying to sell you something . . .

                  Again, I've come across some super knowledgeable people on the discussion boards on Snooth. Also, I live in MA, so I can't buy wine online anyhow, so I don't use that aspect of their site.
                  Snooth's powers that be sent me a nice bottle of bubbles to celebrate the birth of my daughter. Sorry, I ain't mad at 'em.

                    I don't care one way or the other, nor am I trying / hoping / want you to be "mad at them." To paraphrase Rhett Butler, frankly I don't give a $#!+ how anyone feels one way or the other vis-a-vis Snooth. That said, I find it interesting that "Snooth's powers that be sent (you) a nice bottle of bubbles" -- apparently in violation of the state laws of Mass.

                      It was a personal gift, not a sale. Still probably not exceptionally kosher, though. I appreciated the gesture.

            2. I think this type of cross promotion of membership, which I have noted growing since 2006 and was taken to the wall by fellow CH's for even suggesting, btwn CHOW and new partners is here to stay. Snooth is not on my radar but the use of cross promotion on this site is. Imho, these business choices redefine the CH site pre-CBS sale. And, even small assumptions that CH members will roll forward and positively with each new partner, new survey, new writer, new corporate contest, new political ad, new, new, new has been educational to say the least.
