Cafe Vingt Cinq, Santa Fe: Outstanding French Bakery and Cafe at...the Outlet Mall?!

finlero Aug 29, 2011 08:44 AM

Well the location is, um, inauspicious to say the least, but wow, Cafe Vingt Cinq is one hell of a good boulangerie and cafe, quite possibly the best in NM.

I like Clafoutis downtown a lot, but the baked goods and kitchen items at Cafe Vingt Cinq are at least as good, and very possibly better.

I feel like a baguette and a croissant should be the yardsticks of any boulangerie, and both were phenomenal here. Whereas Clafoutis' baguettes and croissants are each a little more rustic, Cafe Vingt Cinq's have a little more urbane polish. The baguette sported a perfect crusty exterior and a nice soft interior, with a good amount of salt. The croissant had a nice, perceptibly deep butter flavor without feeling greasy. Tons of other great looking bakery items, I'm going to have to get back soon for more "research".

We also tried a crepe, which was beautifully executed, with chicken, green chile (after all, it IS Santa Fe) and a bechamel sauce.

Fun specials too, they had a French dip the day we went, which I wish I'd ordered after I tried their excellent baguette.

The location is about as nice as can be expected in an outlet mall, bright and cheerful with a nice, expansive front patio space (with foot traffic only, no car traffic -- it's in an outdoor mall). At very least, the location makes it really easy to hit from ABQ. We will definitely go back, so glad Cafe Vingt Cinq has arrived!

Saw it when I was there with my son awhile back. Never thought to eat at Outlet Center, but nice to know, for sure! Thanks.

Had lunch there today. We really loved the food! I had a wonderful crepe filled with chicken and mushrooms, topped with swiss cheese. It came with a nice little side salad with a great creamy vinaigrette. Hubby had escargot that were in a creme fraiche sauce. It came with baguette slices, tomato salad with yellow grape tomatoes and sliced red tomatoes in a nice vinaigrette. Our little granddaughter liked the chicken from my crepe and the grape tomatoes but LOVED the baguette dunked in the escargot broth.

Yup ! It's as good as everyone says.

Portions are generous and all of the baked goods are terrific. I'll have to get back in to Clafouti for a baguette before I'll say which I believe is best but that that is served at Cafe Vingt Cinq is really good.

Place was nearly full yesterday at lunch and there were many more people throughout the Mall causing me to think that perhaps this little gem of a place was helping the usually deserted Mall out some.

A definite stop for me when on that side of town.

So, who has the "best" baguette ? Just my opinion and, as always as the saying goes, your mileage may vary... my vote goes to the baguette from Clafouti.

Texture is a bit more interesting and I detected a bit more flavor. The baguette from Cafe Vingt Cinq is very, very good; just seems a bit simpler.

I've had both - in the interests of science of course - often side by side at home with soups and, overall, I'd be happy with either but would (privately) smile to myself if I saw a Clafouti baguette on the table.

Fwiw, the baguette from Sage Bakehouse, too, is excellent; just different... heavier and denser. Even the baguettes from the local Whole Foods are good but just cannot compare to either those from Cafe Vingt Cinq or Clafouti.

Happy Eating to all this Thanksgiving !
