ISO Canned Pumpkin
Does anyone know where I might find canned pumpkin this time of year? Most stores only carry it seasonally, other than Whole Foods, where a small can is something like $2.69. I'm looking for plain pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling. Maybe The Grocery Outlet? I live in San Rafael but am in Berkeley/Oakland fairly often - I would really appreciate hearing about any low-cost sightings. TIA.
I make pumpkin oatmeal all the time and have learned to stock up before it sells out for the year. Some years you can find it year round, it just depends.
I didn't say it can't be had, though. I saw some in the San Mateo Target a couple weeks ago, surprising since they move merchandise fast. Check smaller grocery stores; we have a small family owned chain here called Key Market, and there is so much dust on their cans you can almost always get it there. Sometimes Lucky has had just the big cans left, pushed to the back on a top shelf. You're not going to get a good deal on it this time of year, but it's not like anyone's charging $10 a can, it's still not much money. Did you find it at Whole Foods?
I just saw some at the Food Mill in Oakland. Sorry, but I didn't notice the price - looked like 14 oz cans, probably organic.

I work at a Raley's and we carry canned pumpkin year 'round. It's not in the baking aisle. It's with the other canned vegetables.( At our store it's on the very bottom shelf this time of year.) I believe we also carry organic pumpkin in our natural foods section but a lot of those items change occasionally so we may only carry the organic pumpkin aound the holidays.
Also, Raley's owns Bel Air and Nob Hill Foods. So you could try either of those in case you live closer. While all three carry the same lines of food, most Raley's are actually "physically "bigger and have more space so canned pumpkin may be carried as a seasonal item at the smaller stores.
