& hopefully fantastic food too. Any cuisine will do... it's for my mother's birthday so I'm willing to spend in the upper price range

Thanks in advance!

You could also try Bistro K in So. Pasadena and go to Mission Wines and have Chris, the owner, select you a great bottle of wine to have with dinner, and take your choice into the restaurant at no corkage charge!
Some of the best food, and Chris knows wine as well as anyone.
lqmanagementservices.com is the restaurant web site, meaning for Laurent Quenioux, so check it out and see if it might satisfy what you have in mind.

I'd definitely go for Madeleines, especially in terms of wine. The place is known for its extensive wine list. The bartender and sommelier really know their wine. The menu is short and selective, but good. They've revamped the entire place and food after Restaurant Halie remodeled, and it's still as great, if not better. Great ambience, too, and gracious service.

By far the best wine list in Pasadena - by far! - is at Yujean Kang's, an evolved Chinese bistro on Raymond. The California list is just mind-boggling, including rarities I've never seen anywhere else, and there is a great selection of French wines too.

Bistro 45 on Mentor also has a fine list, heavy on the French, and a fistful of Wine Spectator awards.

There are a lot of things to like about Tre Venezie, but the wine list is not one of them.
