  1. Will Sergio still be cooking there?

      YES
my understanding is that conchita felt that there was too much confusion among customers because of the many restaurants that had the same name.
the new name will distinguish this location from the others.

      1. re: westsidegal

So for purposes of Sergio-inspired dishes, wipe Mariscos Chente from the memory banks - Coni's is now the one. Thanks for the heads-up.

Shit, and I was about to go there, thanks for the info. the last time i went to mariscos chente was back when sergio was cooking up a storm at the culver city location, before the litany of reviews, ad naseum.

btw, does sergio's new place in inglewood sell beers and the tomato juce-salt-beer drink?

          thanks.

          1. re: kevin

When we were there a few weeks ago, there was no liquor license. We have heard of folks BYOBing but can't confirm.

            1. re: Mattapoisett in LA

I always bring magaritas...extra for the staff as well.

            2. re: kevin

no liquor license there for now.
              what i've been doing is
              1) if i bring wine, i bring an extra bottle for sergio and tip the waitress as though i'd bought the wine there.
              2) if i bring beer, i bring a couple of extra bottles for sergio and tip the waitress as though i'd bought the beer there.

it's very important for my ongoing pleasure that this place stays in business and thrives. (selfish, i know).
thus far, it looks like any "extra" money i've thrown their way has been used to improve the restaurant's interior appearance and to buy the equipment sergio needs to barbeque the pescado zarandeado.

              1. re: westsidegal

westsidegal, hows the food at this location. Thinking about going next Tuesday night for a farewell dinner for a buddy of ours. Is Sergio making pescado zarandeado, or waiting on the grill?? Isnt Coni his wifes name?? Perhaps his own offshoot now?

                1. re: Foodandwine

                  the food is the same.
sergio has been working at this location for quite some time now.
the grill was installed long ago.
Coni is his sister in-law's name.
sergio and his wife and his son live nearby.

everything is the same except that during the time he's spent working there, (i.e. for the last several months)
                  a) the food has improved
                  and
b: the intereior of the restaurant has been improved.
                  and
                  c) this place has no liquor license, so bring your own and tip as thogh they provided it for your--you will still save money while being able to support their continued excellence.

be aware that the new signage has been ordered, but has not yet been installed, so the sign may still stay the old name. 3544 west imperial highway at the corner of yukon. south side of the street. if you take the freeway coming from the west, prairie is the name of the exit.i

ALWAYS call before you go to make sure that Sergio is cooking that day and to make sure that the restaurant is open (if there is a family emergency they will close the restauran--this being a family operation, there is no deep bench)
here is the phone number: 310-672-2339.
also remember that the close at 8pm on Tuesdays. even at that Sergio is working 12 hr days.. . . .

                  1. re: westsidegal

"be aware that the new signage has been ordered"

Say it isn't so. Isn't their current signage something like a rainbow trout? I remember thinking that it was a bait shop or fishing gear shop with that signage.

                    1. re: JAB

Probably it's a marlin sign. ??? maybe since they got them smoked marlin tacos.

                      1. re: kevin

                        probably not a marlin sign.
i know that they have designed a new, more modern, logo.
my guess is that the logo will be used.
when the sign actually goes up, i'll let everyone know.

                    2. re: westsidegal

westsidegal. Thanks we are going on Tuesday and set for an early dinner. Drove by yesterday ( used Imperial rather than the 105 for a bit heading towards an appointment to the East ) I digress.. Anyway for those with issues finding the spot and no signage. Well, there was a very large sign in NEW BLUE big block letters saying " M A R I S C O S C H E N T E " looks new to me along with a circa 1970's sign in the parking lot. From the outside, place looks like a major upgrade. Nice new stucco outside with skinny bamboo planters.. Thanks for all the tips looking forward..

                    3. re: Foodandwine

the grill has been in place for many months now.
coni is his sister-in-law, his wife's sister.
call before you go to make sure sergio is cooking, ( he only takes off a day every other week)
                      here's the phone number:
                      310-672-2339
they are located on the south side of west imperial highway near the corner of Yukon.
the old sign, that says Mariscos Chente's was still up when i went there earlier this week.
sergio's food is consistently excellent at this location or any other location.

                      1. re: westsidegal

Just wanted to check back. Had a dinner for 5 last night. Called Sergio to confirm he was working in advance. Arrived about 15 minutes before the others were to arrive. Had a beer with Sergio and discussed the menu for the evening.
He came out and introduced himself to our group, mentioned the menu for the evening and the food started to flow.
                        Aguaschile
Ceviche Maratime ( really good in a soy and mango sauce )
                        Marlin Tacos
Ceviche Borachos ( the sauce is a killer with garlic and tequila ) ordered extra rice to sop it up
                        Pescado
Truffle Cake that we brought plus lots of beer and a very happy crowd..
Note: this new place is nice, and a big patio out back too.. Great night Sergio Thanks!

                        1. re: Foodandwine

                          Whers the truffle cake from?

                          Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.

                            1. re: Foodandwine

Did you make the cake? Sorry.

Anyhow I'm always on the lookout for a great chocolate truffle cake?

                  2. re: kevin

                    kevin:
if you bring your own ingredients, they will happily make it for you.
since they don't have a liquor license, they can't "sell" you beer, but they will assemble the drink for you.

                    1. re: westsidegal

awesome, margharitas it is. the only thing i don't like about the location on Imperial Hwy in Inglewood is the metallic design to the interior of the place, this might sound wrong but sometimes it makes be feel like im in a jail.

but their shrimp dishes are amazing as always and i recently tried killer shrimp again, and even though both are completely different styles of shrimp preparation, i still prefer Mariscos Chente for shrimp dishes any day of the week over Killer Shrimp.

                      1. re: kevin

i have a similar objection re: the new redo of the Cafe Del Rey interior space.
it used to be very simple, elegant, modern.
now it looks like someone went to Cost Plus World Market to buy 'accessories' for it, and painted some of the walls bright colors to act as "accent" walls.
the new look at Cafe del Rey is HORRIBLE imho.

otoh, clearly, the new interior of Coni'Seafood is better-looking than the place i saw at the beginning. The first time i saw the imperial hwy location the refrigerator was sitting along a wall in the dining room. Sergio got that monolithic thing moved so that it was out of view ASAP

            3. CONI'SEAFOOD it is. Great ! Not ,Marisco Chente. Good for Sergio.

              1. Just adding the right link to the post.........
