Favorite Wine Bars?

MattC02 Aug 28, 2011 03:47 PM

Hope this haven't been coverered already but didn't see much in search...I'm looking to try out a new wine bar...any ideas? I'm very well acquainted with the Wink Wine Bar, Vino Vino and The Grove. Just looking for someplace new with a good variety of wine by the glass and yummy food to go with it. What are your favorites that we should try?

I like Mulberry for this, and their food is freaking awesome.

Yes! I do like Mulberry and forgot about them. I had an amazing pork belly and lentil dish from them once that I still remember.

oooh, i like This topic... here are my impressions on places i've been in town...

Apothecary Coffee House & Wine Bar
--Feels more like a coffee house than a wine bar to me, but has decent wine selection with some exciting options… food is blah...

      Aviary
--Wine bar in an eclectic furniture store. I like the fact that they have an eclectic wine selection also, including a cab franc, which most wine bars in town don’t carry… has some snackage, though haven't ever tried any other than cheese...

      Cork & Co
--My first love… had a great crew working there, but haven't been back in a long time… they've got stuff to nosh on, but nothing substantial

Cru Wine Bar – 2nd Street, The Domain
--Hit-or-miss wine selection with a dry atmosphere. I prefer the outdoor patio on 2nd street for some people watching… food is meh...

Fion Wine Pub – Bee Caves, Steiner Ranch
--Haven’t been here yet since it’s out in the middle of nowhere, but the cheese selections look great! Have to make it out there some time… they've also have a food menu, but again, haven't been there so wouldn't have any idea if it's good or not...

The Grove Wine Bar and Kitchen
--a little too far for me to venture to, but had an amazing wine flight here one time. Food was just okay…

      House Wine
--now HOW many people are serving orange muscat in this town? Reason alone for me to go to this house… they have food to nosh on also, but can't remember what exactly...

      Malaga
--cavernous and has extensive wine list, food is hit or miss but where else can I get a sweet malaga wine in town?

      Max’s Wine Dive
--literally a dive, very dank and loud. Great wine selection though and food can be hit or miss—just learn to order what you like…

      Mulberry
--tiny, but strives to give you some great wines that you can’t find elsewhere in a 50 mile radius… was my favorite for a while…

      Opa Coffee and Wine Bar
--haven’t been here yet but it makes me think of Greek wine, which makes me want to run in the other direction…

      Paggi House
--I know this is technically a restaurant, but they’ve got an extensive wine list and the best cheese plate in town, which can be enjoyed on their amazing deck…

      Simplicity Wine & Eats
--a cheaper (and more dive-y) version of Max’s Wine Dive, with some quality wines and food options, might become my new haunt… it's also one of Parind Vora's places (Restaurant Jezebel and Braise)

Uncorked Tasting Room and Wine Bar
--feels like you’re in someone’s house that has a decent wine selection… i only remember ordering cheese here, not sure what else they have...

      Vino Vino
--my standby when I don’t want to be downtown, although it heavily features European wines, which I’m not That fond of… they’ve got some really good bites here, which includes some amazing moules frites…

      Wink Wine Bar
--great crew next to my favorite restaurant, hate that it gets crowded though… good little wine selection, with some obviously good food…

So i'd prolly give Max's, Mulberry, Paggi House, or Simplicity a shot, since you've already done Vino Vino and Wink... if you make it to Fion, lemme know how it goes...

of course, you could always check out the wine selection at the restaurants Fleming's, Jasper's, North, or Trio also...
