We're renting a house in Bass Lake for a week. There will be 6 adults, a baby and 2 dogs so we aren't looking for fine dining options. From the info I can gather, it seems the closest large grocery store is the Vons in Oakhurst. Does anyone know of any good bakeries or other food purveyors in the area? We'll be cooking almost all of our meals at the house and I'd like to make them interesting.
Any other tips/suggestions are welcome.
I just found out that there is a Farmer's Market in Bass Lake on Wedn nights through Sept. Since you will be there a week, definitely check it out; 4 to 7 pm in Pines Village, 54432 Road 432, Bass Lake,. My favorite local stone fruit farmer, Shasky Farms, is there; they have great peaches, plouts, nectarines and nuts. Their red walnuts are the best!
If for any reason you find yourself in Mariposa (and note that while the Motor forest fire has closed highway 140 east of Mariposa, Mariposa itself is not directly affected, and 49 between Mariposa and Oakhurst/Bass Lake is open), Jantz Bakery right on the Main Street is terrific. Closed Sundays. Wonderful pies, great baked goods. About 35 miles/50 minutes from Bass Lake and at least arguably worth the drive just for the bakery. You could also visit the Mariposa County Fair (if going Labor Day weekend) or the Mining Museum, if you need an excuse....
The Raley's in Merced has a pretty good selection of salads in its deli; I like their 'old-fashioned' macaroni salad (their name, not mine), so I'd agree with the suggestion to check them out in Oakhurst. I've heard from friends who live there that the new, big Raley's on 49 in Oakhurst is nice.
