Seeking delicious yellow layer cake with superior chocolate frosting to feed about 40.
I'm looking for a simple and delicious classic yellow cake with quality chocolate frosting. No whipped cream. No sugar frosting. Like the Duncan Hines boxed cake -- only really tasty. Was going to order a cake from Flour but $100 is steep. People have recommended Lyndell's and Patsy's Pastry in Somerville. Thanks!

Oh. And I should mention I need to get it in the Somerville/Cambridge area! Thanks.

For what it's worth, I've used Flour on a couple of occasions for this size party, and it was roundly deemed to be worth the high price tag.

MC is heading you to the right place but I'm going to suggest a variation on your theme.
If you'd like a light yellow sponge with incredible chocolate glaze pick the Flour Boston Cream Pie. It looks like a cake. They decorate it beautifully and they can make it whatever size you want.
Friends had it at an event this summer and we copied them and had it as our July 4th dessert. It is light, not too sweet. People were going back for thirds. Even my husband who avoids sweets as a rule.

It was well worth the price! It was the hit of both events.

Not sure where you are but Donna's Cakes in West Roxbury may fit the bill and the prices are quite reasonable.
Sorry - hit reply quickly and did not read the responses so my suggestion may be a bit out of your way!

I don't know about chocolate frosting, but Lyndell's yellow cake with buttercream is delicious. I'd take the chance with them!

Based on the black and white cookies (more like small cakes) I've had from Lyndell's, I will vouch both for their yellow cake and for the chocolate frosting.

If Lyndell's is your choice, Buy with me has $15 for $30 of goods through Nov 20 deal today.

I cannot tolerate any frosting but Italian meringue buttercream; for that with cheaper rates, I'd call Cambridge School of Culinary Arts and ask for any second-semester pastry student. (first-semester has the skills, but might as well get an extra bit of experience).

Try Party Favors in Brookline. Might be over your budget too but they make a good cake with an excellent butter cream. They also do fancy decorations if you want.

I've bought chocolate sheet cakes and various cupcakes from Quebrada Bakery in East Arlington. Absolutely delicious and not overly sugary.

I second Quebrada in Arlington. All their cakes are rich, moist, flavorful and not overly sugary. Single layer half-sheet is $35, Layered is $75.

I get my special order cakes at Bella Moto in Arlington (opposite the Stop and Shop on Mass Ave). Frances is a one-woman bakery, and she will work with you to make what you want. The chocolate frosting can be buttercream or more ganache. I think a cake for 40 people would run about $50. Whenever I have brought her cakes places, I end up giving out her name to at least half the guests who can't wait to get their own!
