Casper's Tamales

Did I really just find out that Casper'so Hot Dogs has tamales and they are supposed to be good? Beef and chicken - anyone tried them?

Aw, c'mon East Bay folks, someone's gotta try the tamale and report back!

Ha, ha, will do. I hadn't noticed this thread before due to my disinterest in having hot dogs prepared for me, but I've always liked Casper's visual style, and the level of ridiculousness of ordering a tamale as a side to a hot dog really appeals to me.

I have to go to Bevmo on San Pablo this weekend and usually make a stop at Caspers. I'll consider a tamale, but I keep having flashbacks to junior high school cafeteria Mexican food.

I've noticed them on the menu but assumed, perhaps wrongly, that they were to be avoided. Love the Casper Dog though.

I've lived in the East Bay since 1988 and have never set foot in a Casper's. Are the hot dogs really that good?

The Casper Dog is almost a Chicago Dog, minus the sport peppers and with less-brightly-colored relish. You can get sliced tomato, sliced onion along with the usual mustard, catsup, relish. I wouldn't say that the dog itself was great, but certainly more than acceptable and excellent with all the fixings. I especially like the Hayward branch because it is in a vintage 50's building.

On the topic of hot dogs, there was a stand at the Solano Stroll that had huge, hand-dipped corn dogs and corn LA hot sausages. They were irregularly shaped and there was a lot of tender, sweet corn meal on the chicken dog. Aside from the fact that they browned the outside a bit too much, they were really tasty and fun.

Oh you're right, tamales are listed as a side dish on the menu.

          I'm curious too. Anyone?
