Found Umami Paste No. 5 in Saskatoon!

chefathome Aug 27, 2011 08:03 PM

Was browsing in the cookbook section at McNally Robinson in Saskatoon over the weekend and was surprised to find tubes of Umami Paste No. 5 there. Naturally I bought some.

Just wanted to alert those who may be interested in this wonderful product.

I was there a couple days ago, but alas, I left empty-handed. Have you had the opportunity to try it out yet?

I am curious. To what would you add it to?

By the looks of it, it would be a great addition to stews, soups, sauces or braised meats. I have heard others that tried it that it brings a lot of depth to the flavours. It would be fun to experiment for sure.

I have not opened it yet as we have been away a lot and once opened you are to use it in 2 weeks I believe. Will let you know when I do. My plan is to use it in risotto first of all.

Oh, shoot. It was almost hidden on a table amongst the preserving books (not on a shelf). Are you able to go again soon? I think I counted 8 tubes (in boxes) of it when I was there. I should have hidden all the tubes somewhere sneaky and THEN posted it here so you would know where to find it!

I'm popping over there before I catch my plane. Hopefully there will be a couple tubes left.

FANTASTIC! I'm so pleased. Were there other boxes left? I will be there again soon...

They do keep a few in stock, but there's no specific place for it. Usually, they keep them on the table with the jars of preserves and foodie gift items.

We were there last week and alas - they had none in stock.

After reading your post , I decided to look for it here in Calgary and found it at Market17. Even the person at the till was curious about it. Googled it and now can not wait to use it ! Thanks for the post.
