Avacado - YYC - 17th Ave SW

TSAW Aug 27, 2011 02:50 PM

We just had a very enjoyable lunch at Avacado. We had planned to wander on down 17th this afternoon and have lunch at either the new Ox and Angela or Cilantro. Sadly, we didn't do much pre-planning and found out that both are not open on Saturdays until 5pm. But Avacado was open with plenty of room on the patio. Although there was nearly no one in the entire place, we decided to give it a try. And it was actually very good. We assumed it would be a mexican inspired food, by the name, but aside from the few burritos and one quesadilla dish, they had a good mix of menu items. I had the beef short ribs with garlic mashed potatoes, and grilled zuccini and cherry tomatoes. The beef was wonderfully braised and tender. Hot Date had one of the 'summer specials', a thick cut grilled pork chop with tomato jam, julienne veggies and roast baby potatoes. The pork was cooked to perfection and the sides were generous portions.

People started to trickle in while we were there. It was getting quite busy by the time we left. But despite a late lunch crowd picking up, the service was excellent and very attentive. I think we even got a little extra wine in our 8oz servings!

We didn't have room for dessert but may like to come back to try the homemade churros next time!

They have 4 locations, 2 in Calgary, 1 in St. Albert, and 1 in Saskatoon. I've eaten in the Saskatoon location and was satisfied - I don't remember what I had - too long ago. Nonetheless, I've added them to the database.
I'll link to the 2 Calgary locations:

Thankfully the Avocado in Aspen Glen Landing has shut down. Dreadful food. Could not get over the fact they put romaine lettuce in their burritos. An Original Joes is taking its place.

Wow - It crossed my mind that there could be wildly varying experience from location to location in chains. I will mark it as closed. Thank you.

There's also one in Deerfoot Meadows. (Note that this isn't a recommendation. Everyone says it's terrible!)

I certainly trust TSAWs review on the 17th Ave SW location.

My mistake was to add 2 locations that had no positive reviews that I'm aware of, (Aspen & St. Alberts) - adding is not an exact science and I've made many mistakes.

Still I think, when one adds to the Chow database, one should only add what has been recommended (mea culpa) . My opinion only - others may differ.

I haven't been to the one in St Albert, but friends of mine have and they said it wasn't good.

I had heard that about Deerfoot meadows too, so was pleasantly surprised by the 17th Ave location. Maybe you don't last long on that strip if you're food is really terrible.

Restaurants? No. Bars with bad food? Oh my god, yes. Like forever.

Avocado in St. Albert is no more - closed awhile ago. Funny thing was hubby and I went and had a great chicken burrito - the place was packed and people seemed to be enjoying themselves - but no one else I know had anything good to say about the place so that's probably why.
