Why is chicken so expensive?

2 pieces at honey kettle with sides is $10
about $9 or $8 at KFC.

What gives?

Fried chicken....Roscoe's one breast $5. Let me guess for the $3 at popeyes it was all dark meat.

I find (dark meat only) to be a positive thing.

        Roscoe's is a rip-off.

what? dark meat? maybe that's the problem.

the only white meat fried chicken i ever loved came in a whopping $100 for 2 fried birds.

    2. Yeah, I happened to be at Popeye's yesterday and they had a one day - 8/25 - special. $5 for 8 pieces -- 2 wings, breasts, thighs, drumsticks. Don't know how often they do it but a great deal. For the others -- they'll charge what people will pay

re: popeyes, it was a one time deal.

      2. Every supermarket has 8 pieces for between 5-8...depending on whether it's fresh or not, I find ralphs, albertsons and gelsons pretty good...vons/pavillions is not.

If you just buy chicken the cost isn't as bad . They make their money on drinks and sides.
The Popeyes deal yesterday repeats from time to time. I have resorted to internet deals. coupons and e-mailings to keep costs down. If anyone see a Brent's deal someplace let me know. :)

Pavillions is decent if you get it fresh out of the fryer. If it's been sitting there for a while - you could choke the breasts. And that's no exaggeration. Awful, nasty stuff. Only slightly (and tolerably) overcooked when it first comes out. Just ask how long it's been out, or wait for the new batch.

As grocery store fried chicken goes Publix is pretty good.

            2. at Honey's, I find a la carte to be a better deal. 4 thighs for 8.50? a side of bread & butter pickles for less than a buck? yes, please. I guess for 1 person, that would be too much food... but their fried chicken is so yummy. Their sides not so much. And gimme moist, succulent & meaty thighs only! No breast for me - dry & flavorless. Dark meat is so much better than white meat. I will never go to a KFC or Popeyes or Pioneer ever again.

              1. $4.50 for half a chicken, deep fried in butter from Banh Mi My Tho. Comes with broken rice or bun, pickled carrots & radish, and a few slices of cucumber.

Maybe your'e going to the wrong places.

Honey Kettle has to pay downtown Culver City rent and their apathetic workers.

I didn't know people still went to KFC.

                1. A 2-piece meal at Popeyes, which comes with biscuit & one side, runs around $5.

Current coupon is 5 Pcs Mixed Chicken or Louisiana Tenders, 2 Reg Sides & 2 Biscuits for $6.99.

                  1. go to Dino's on pico

                    1. an approximatelly 3 lb chicken at Costco is still only $4.95 plus tax - from the rotisserie.
No better deal in town, and better tasting than most all those mentioned on this post!.

                      1. I concur with the Costco ($5 for a whole rotisserie chicken), Popeye's (on Tuesdays it's a leg and a thigh for 99 cents) and Dino's (for about $6 you get half a charbroiled chicken, a mountain of fries, a side of coleslaw and three corn tortillas) recs.
