This may be too far 'south' for you but the Clinton House Bakery in Hunterdon County has some of the best linzer tarts I've had anywhere. I don't know if the bakers are European trained but the pastries I've bought there come very close to ones I've had in Germany and Prague.
While the bakery is part of the Clinton House restaurant, it also operates a separate retail establishment right next door. Go early!

Marlboro Bake Shop in Montclair has them in both sizes. More servicable than reverential. Like most of their wares....

The ones at Varrelmann's in Rutherford looked great, have you tried them?

Thanks for the heads up....I am not familiar with Varrelmann's, but I will most certainly give it a try when I am in the area.....The same for harrison's suggestion of the Marlboro Bake Shop in Montclair. Unfortunately, those tow areas are not on my usual paths of travel. When life gets back to normal on the Route 23 & 80 corridors, I thought i would stop by the new place Assault & Buttery in ...Little Falls?
After I made the original post, I ended up at B & W in Hackensack. They had what I would consider a medium size cookie for $1.15 each. I did not try them myself, but the person I gave them too said they were very good......they only had the one size, no large or miniature sizes available.

These were the 3" or so size. Not sure if they have minis. I thought you were a local, actually .
