Looking for cajeta in Chapel Hill

LulusMom Aug 23, 2011 10:10 AM

I'm trying to make some caramel paletas, and the recipe I have calls for 3/4 cup cajeta, which is described as "a sticky, sweet goat's milk caramel." No idea how this comes - a can? Is anyone familiar with this item, and have any ideas on where I could find it in or near Chapel Hill?

many thanks for any advice you can give.

If it's sold in stores, you should be able to find it in Carrboro. My first thought was the Foodlion on Jones Ferry Rd in Carrboro, simply for ease of parking, but the staff there may not be able to help much . Also possibly Cliff's Meat Market or Don Jose's at the intersection of Rosemary and Main St.

I don't know about CH, but just about every Latino store in Raleigh carries it. It's just dulce de leche made from goat's milk, rather than cow's milk. It comes in jars or squeeze bottles and is shelved with the dulce de leche. If you have a favorite supermercado try them first.

The Food Lion in Carrboro Plaza has a good selection of Mexican stuff or try your local mercado.

Wonderful tip, Tom. I happen to be going right by there today to pick Lulu up from a playdate! Thanks so much.

Unfortunately no luck today in the Food Lion at Carrboro Plaza. Also no luck on curry leaves in the asian store there. Not my "find fun food items" day.

The Hispanic section of any Super Walmart has it. It comes in a brown squeeze bottle.

Finally found it! Thanks for all the suggestions - much appreciated. I found it in a little tienda on Elliiot Rd. that I didn't even know existed. It's across from the Burger King on the side of the strip mall there that faces 15/501.

FYI there's a Chow Tip video on how to make cajeta at home. You can get goat milk at Weaver Street.
