Not many options, I'm afraid. If you will be spending more than a day in the area, I don't understand your limitation to the Red Line. Buses may work better for you.

Just two stops from Union Station (is that what you meant?) is the Chinatown/Penn Quarter station, which has a lot of restaurants. Do a search for Chinatown or Metro Center and you will have lots of suggestions.

Good idea. Also, if you're comfortable walking a bit and the weather allows it, stroll east on H Street from Union Station and find a LOT in the Atlas District.

I think there is a shuttle along H st from Union Station to the Atlas District as mentioned below. I like the Star and Shamrock, which is a combination Irish Bar / Jewish Delicatessen. How's that for unique? I've only been there once, but it's the kind of place you're looking for.

I thought they stopped running that shuttle...

I would also recommend Toki Underground for delicious Japanese ramen, Granville Moore's for moules frites and good Belgian beers, Souk for Moroccan/Mediterranean, or Ethiopic for Ethiopian. There's a new felafel shawarma place that I haven't tried yet but looks promising called Shawafel.

Note that the neighborhood is gentrifying and parts of it still look quite rough, depending where you're coming from.

If you're not that adventuresome you might want to walk along Mass Ave, NE (near Union Station). Within the first few blocks there's some variety. I had a good lunch at Bistro Cacao. There's also Cafe Berlin; La Loma; and sometimes good Indian at White Tiger.

If you want a grubby Irish bar, walk in the other direction to the Irish Times, or if you want things a little nicer, the Dubliner (both quite near Union Station).

Not of these are great but they are easy to get to!
