Recommendations for fun eating around the National Harbor area???

lwbatterson Aug 23, 2011 08:37 AM

My girl and I are coming into the National Harbor for an extended weekend this week, and are looking to do hopping around in the Alexandria area mostly, Hurricane Irene be damned. Looking for some good atmosphere to go with some good grub (indian, seafood, dive bars, whatever as long as it's good). Also, are there any micro-breweries in the area??

Thanks for all the help in advance!

Ill leave it to others to make the usual responses about National Harbor being more or less a convention goers desert as far as dining choices go. But youve already said you intend to visit Alexandria which will be the bulk of the recommendations anyway.

What I will reply to is about the micro breweries in the area. For at least two generations we had nothing here while cities like Philadelphia and Baltimore had thriving native beer cultures. But in the past year or so several breweries have opened up in the area including Port City in Alexandria (3950 Wheeler Avenue). They do tastings (and tours) Wednesday and Friday nights and most of the day on Saturday and Sunday. They have three beers currently (their porter is excellent) and they are about to add an Oktoberfest.

DC Brau is also a new brewery located in NE Washington. Their tasting/tour hours seem a little more inconsistent but you can find them on tap here and there.

Chocolate City JUST opened to the public this past weekend I think and I know nothing about tours or tasting hours but I do know they had a big release party at RFD in China Town which is one of the better beer bars in the DC area. Also check out Pizzeria Paradiso in Georgetown if you get out that way during some of your tourist ventures. They have one in Old Town Alexandria if thats easier but I prefer the one in Georgetown for its much better selection and often unusual features. Other good beer places in Alexandria include Columbia Fire House, Bilbo Baggins, Redrocks Pizzeria and Hanks Oyster Bar usually has something interesting on tap. Best beer bar in Alexandria though is Rustico which blows away the others as far as selection and makes a mean grilled Ceaser salad.
