Are there any Lao or Northern Thai restaurants in the city?

I am part Lao, and have never learned any Lao recipes. I am hoping to find a little bit of "home" cooking...I know the chances are slim...but I am hoping to find any Lao or Northern Thai restaurants in Toronto.

Any names?

  1. Mong Kut Thai on the Danforth has a small section of Lao/Northern Thai dishes. Careful though most of the menu is the standard dumbed down stuff you find everywhere. Talk to the owners and I'm sure they would be happy to help you.

It's hard to find good northern Thai food in Bangkok, so I imagine there isn't much in Toronto.
The owners of Vanipha are from Nong Khai, so they give lip service to Lao-Issan dishes. (i.e. laab, som tam, 'gai yang'). They have at least one northern dish as well. (nam prik ong)
The last meal I had there was years ago and was terrible.
Maybe try the new Khao San Rd Restaurant and ask if they will prepare for you. Most Thai cooks know how to do the staples.

Vanipha on St clair closed a couple of months ago.

    2. Nuit from Khao San Road is from the north, and has a few northern dishes on the menu. Don't know if they can still arrange off-menu special dinners like they did when they ran Sukhothai, but if so I'm sure she could dazzle you.

I'll second Khao San Road as good quality. If you ever make it to Las Vegas, Lotus of Siam has a large number of Northern Thai and Lao items on their menu.

What happened to Sukho Thai? I've spoken to her on a few occasions (in Lao too, so rare), but that was 2 years ago, so Sukho Thai is closed now and Khao San Road is open? She is extremely friendly, so friendly in fact, I remember not taking her up on offers to make off-menu items because I felt so guilty because I know she actually takes the time to buy the ingredients herself.

Thanks for the information, this would explain the last few times driving to Sukho Thai and finding them closed...if I can't find a place that offers "Nam Khao", I might beg her to make it.

Seriously though, Nam Khao is right up there for me with Pho, and duck confit as the most delicious entree ever conceived.

Sukho Thai is still open, Nuit and Jeff just moved on to Khao San Road.

I wouldn't hold your breath for off-menu items at Khao San Road, though -- they are 10X busier than they were at Sukho Thai and are pretty much slammed all the time. I'm not saying don't ask, but just be aware that the circumstances have changed.

You're absolutely right. I will ask, but definitely won't get my hopes up. Does she spend most of her time at a particular restaurant? Or is it split 50/50?

                She's left Sukhothai entirely.
