Enoteca Sociale? George? Other suggestions for business dinner?

My boss is looking to book a dinner for 6 people and she is looking for somewhere "funky and fresh and good" - somewhere as close to Bay and Bloor as possible, but that is more "up and coming" and yet still "fancy" (i.e. not Guu-ish). Somewhere that will impress but not be a Scaramouche/Pangaea/Buca old standby.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

  1. Hmm... George is neither funky, nor fresh. Enoteca may be *too* hip/casual for business, definitely not fancy.

Given the location constraint, I'd look at Malena in Yorkville or something over on the Harbord strip.

I'd take anywhere in the downtown core, just that's where we're starting out from. Thanks!

While IMO funky/fresh/good stays away from Bay/Bloor as much as possible, you have a few options:
        - Origin (likely your best bet, but losing its fresh funk daily)
        - Frank's Kitchen (funky, very good, but tough to get reso for 6)
        - Harbord Room (not up and coming, but decent, though has recent mixed reviews from CHers)
        - Boehmer (on Ossington, perhaps too far, but you did mention Enoteca Sociale)
        - Drake Hotel has a pop-up restaurant that's heavy on comfort food but decently executed (their fried chicken is the best I've had)

Just found out it'll be a MONDAY night....so that makes things even harder...

      2. Origin would be a good pick for ambience
or how about La Societe it has a good vibe through the food is average but its very close to bay and bloor and is open on Monday
Marben though a lil far off would also be a great choice open on Monday
splendido is fantastic though its not particularly hip
nota bene maybe in the old standby category!

leave la societe out of it...

there are more solid choices for yorkville,

          pangaea
          opus
          nervosa
          bellini's
maybe (and I mean maybe) one
          caren's

Yes, this all began when she asked me to book at La Societe, and I said, "I don't think I can do that to you."

I think of Pangaea and Opus as being exactly what OP's looking to avoid.
Origin/Colborne Lane are good bets, Rodney's By Bay...

Just a heads up that Marben is no longer open on Monday.

          3. Not quite where you are looking for and also not quite "funky" but the new resto at the Ritz is good for business and certainly new

i would +1 origin and add blowfish to the list.
it'll be quiet on a monday but it has the 'funky' factor. they'll be able to hear themselves speak and the food is good.
i thought toca at the ritz was fantastic but perhaps a little to quiet and stiff.

            2. Great news! It's not longer a Monday, it's a Tuesday, opening me back up to a world of possibilites! I'm making the final decision today, if anyone has any last thoughts! Thanks, and I'll let you know where she picks!
