For a date? Depends on if you actually want to talk...downstairs is definitely quieter, but upstairs is fun and skews younger, especially on the weekends...

Oh yeah, downstairs is definitely more quiet, less crowded, but upstairs is so much more fun, with people watching, piano playing, corporate parties, toasts, etc.

i'm kind of torn - i'd like some peace and quiet so it can be kind of romantic (i've heard the place can sometimes be excrutiatingly loud), yet i don't want to be sitting amongst the senior citizens. any advice on why you would choose up or down would be much appreciated.

Well, even downstairs, you certainly won't be sitting among senior citizens, at least ones who don't act like they're senior in any way; trust me, the older ones sometimes make the most noise. Why don't you call the place and ask the hostess what she'd recommend for a Saturday night with your specific preferences? I'm sure they have experience with such requests. Perhaps she can seat you upstairs near the back.

hey, all. thx much for the advice.

so, i checked out both the upstairs and down when we got there (9:30PMish), and i liked the down better as it had a little bit more of a chill/quiet atmosphere - maybe since our reservations were on the later side. so we took that, and everything was great.

best steak (28 oz prime rib) i think i've ever had (and steak/chop houses are my fav genre), colossal shrimp cocktail was ridiculously good (firm and tasty, cocktail sauce nice n spicy, cool bit of drama when they arrive in the steamy dry ice), wine was great (lots of choices, they pur a fantastic 9 oz. pere glass), service was fantastic.

about $180 with tip for the two of us, yet i feel it was worth every penny.

mastro's rules. great night, great meal.
