Ham Slug ? ?

SO is to be traveling via roadways to Houston TX. He's had a request to stop in a small town and purchase Ham Slug. For real - I've never heard of this but I've been told that it's about baseball sized and covered in black pepper. It's to be uber-delicious and very expensive.

So - my question to other CHer's - Is this legit and is it worth his time to take the side road and return with a ham slug?

I could not find anything worthy on the 'net so I"m asking the next legit source that I know.

Really good find for a heat-stricken Texan.

Any idea of the original muscle?

        No idea what muscle.

It's definitely a "ham" though, (as opposed to a loin).

Let me add another thing. See the three slices and end piece in the middle image? I carved those off for the photo and then cut a half inch sliver to eat out of hand.

It wasn't awful, but I thought to myself, "Meh.".

Then I ate another, bigger sliver. And another.

Polished off all you see cut and maybe another slice or two before making that sandwich in the last picture.

        Point is: It *IS* addictive.

        Be forewarned.

What's the small town he's stopping in for this?

I'm pretty sure the "slug salad" shown in the link above isn't what they are talking about.

      See the second paragraph here:

      http://www.original-bbq-recipes.com/d...

I'll bet that's what they are referring to. It's a smoked pork "chunk", heavily seasoned with black pepper.

      I want one...NOW.

BTW, I've been to Dozier's many many times, but it looks like I will have to make as special trip now. If this is where he's stopping, make sure he gets some beef and/or turkey jerky as well. It's worth the trip.

Yeah - That's it. I've never had it but thank you for the referral.

Tee Hee - I told SO that he could trust the CHer's.

Slugs have been procured. He's in the process of getting a cooler to get them on the plane as check in cuz' I'm sure it would never get thru carry on security.

Sorry DoobieWah - I don't know if there was jerky obtained but he did say something about slug kielbasa and pepperoni. Guess I'll find out when it gets back to Phoenix.

Here's the only thing that I found on the internet. Weird.

That's exactly what I came up with. So, a ham slug is supposed to be so delicious that once you have it, you'll want more. Ahem - That sounds and looks really disgusting. I'll le6t SO choose his own fate . . .

So, is a ham slug an actual slug? Or some kind of pork product that looks like a slug?
