Good places in and around Canandaigua Lake area?

We will be staying at a resort on Canandaigua Lake next week, and I'm trying to find good places to eat. We're a family of four, our children are 4, and 17 months, but they are well behaved and used to going to restaurants. Looking for family friendly places for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Anything from diners to something a little more upscale, any price point. Any recs would be great!

  1. There are some nice restaurants at the North end of Canandaigua Lake. Docs, The Inn at the Lake, The Wine and Culinary Center, Muars, Steamboat Landing. And then you have Simply Crepes on Main St as well as Eddie O'Briens. On Eastern Blvd ( just around the corner ) there is Applebees and assorted fast food place ( Tim Hortons, McDonalds, Wendys and Arbys ) Wegmans grocery store also has a cafe to the right side of the store. If you have never been to a Wegmans you must go, plus the cafe has all sorts of food, pizza, chinese, salads, Italian etc

I just went to that Wegman's, my first. I stopped by totally as a tourist. They even have a full bar! Apparently there is live music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, by the bar at the dining area.

I'd go there in a minute for meals, especially if I was still travelling with young children. Plus there's free Wifi and plenty of electric outlets in the cafe. There's also outdoor seating that reminded me of Cafe du Monde in New Orleans.

    2. IMHO the best restaurant in Canandaigua is a Mexican restaurant called Rio Tomatlan. It was opened by a Mexican family who originally opened another restaurant in nearby Sodus which was primarily intended to cater to Mexican farm workers who came up to pick the apple crop. The Canandaigua place is a little more upscale, but still authentic and very good.

Another place I have enjoyed many times but haven't been to in a year or so is Casa de Pasta. It is an old school red sauce Italian, but well done.

MacGregors (across the street from the Wine and Culinary Center) has a nice outdoor deck, a huge selection of beers on tap, and the food is, well, bar food.

I'd avoid Steamboat Landing, Doc's, or the new place Nolan's. The views are nice, the food, not so much.

      1. In Canandaigua itself, I don't know any restaurants; all I can recommend is Roseland Water Park. It's one of the best aquatic amusement establishments I have tried with my kids.

As for eateries, the closest one to Canandaigua I can recommend is just Southeast of Geneva, Emile's. It is Italian-based cuisine, very rustic and comfortable, with a good salad bar.

        1. I live in Rochester and get out to the Finger Lakes fairly often. It would be VERY worth your while to get in the car and explore the surrounding area. There are great places to eat and visit throughout the region, none too far from where you'll be.

Try the Red Dove Tavern in Geneva, The Brown Hound near Bristol...or actually, check out this article. A good list of places to try

Also, look up the magazine "Edible Finger Lakes"....lots of great info there.

          1. We are heading up to Canandaigua Lake this summer and staying at the Bristol Springs resort. How was your vacation last summer? What would you recommend after the fact? My DH used to live there 20 years ago so we need some updates. Of course we want to visit Wegmans and a lot of the wineries but what worked for you? He remembers Alladins Natural Eatery in Pittsford and some little restaurant in Hammonsport. We have 2 kids 9 and 6 so upscale will not be on the menu for this trip. Thanks so much!
