nice paper plates and napkins to serve up appetizers?

I'm wondering where to get some nice paper plates and napkins in the Toronto area that are a little nicer than the grocery store variety but not crazy expensive. A lot of what I've seen is very flowery and traditional, we are going for more of a modern/contemporary style.

I figure, I'm putting a lot of work into making a whole bunch of hors d'oeuvres, salads and small bites, and they deserve to be served nicely. We'll be outside so I'm a bit weary of using my actual plates, plus I don't think I'll have enough.

Thoughts?

The most beautiful paper plates I've seen are made by Wasara, a Japanese company. Goodegg in Kensington Market carries them.

You may want to try Party Packagers as well, more expensive then Dollarama for sure, but nice selection.

Not sure where you are coming from but Party Depot on Doncaster (Yonge north of Steeles) has a great selection. Was just there this morning. Lots of choice.

Thanks for the ideas so far,, I am in the downtown core area around St Lawrence market. I don't have a Costco membership and not near a dollar store I can think of. There is a nice stationery store in the PATH I may try near Bymark.

Yes, Essence du Papier near Bymark should have what you want. I would also check out HomeSense at 195 Yonge. The nearest Dollarama would probably be Spadina & Adelaide or College Park. Btw, Dollarama is also coming soon near you - next to No Frills in the Toronto Sun building.

Teatro Verde has some beautiful paper plates and napkins. They might have been made by Pierre Belvedere. Not crazy expensive (less than $20 for a package of 12 dinner plates, if I recall correctly) but much pricier than Hallmark or Chinette.

Costco sells disposables made of plastic. They are much nicer and sturdier than the Chinette stuff in regular stores. We used them for an outdoor gathering. Many of our guests gave them a thumbs up. I think they are also reusable.

Do you have a Costco membership? If so, they have a box of disposable (and recyclable, I hope) plastic plates that look quite nice. They have a nice heft and are square, with rounded corners. They are just plain white (maybe off-white). You'll find them next to the Chinette plates. The box comes with both large and small plates.

You'd be surprised actually of what you can find at Dollarama. They have more than the ordinary fare sometimes. I've seen fancy stainless steel sauce containers and actual good plates.

The other place you could try is a paper place or professional print shop. People don't usually think of a paper supplier having more than just cards but I'm sure they can assist you with any custom napkins you'd like to provide for your guests.

Just some suggestions to get it rolling. Hope it helps and good luck with the event.
