midnight wifi cafe near Greenwood, dinner near Avenue Rd x Lawrence and Cherry St, lunch near Finch x McCowan

  • 7

I need help with four locations: near Greenwood TTC station (Friday late night), near Avenue Road x Lawrence Avenue West (weekday dinner), near Cherry St. T&T (weekday night), and near Finch Avenue East x McCowan Road (weekday lunch).

My friend is moving into an apartment near Greenwood TTC station on Friday night but the landlord will not let her use the internet until Monday morning for some obscure reason, so she wants to know if there is a 24/7 internet cafe in the area, or a cafe or pub with free wi-fi that is open 24 hours, or at least until midnight or so. I said I will take her to a Starbucks on Saturday morning, but she says she needs to contact someone in Japan on Skype on Friday at around 11:30pm. If I cannot find anything I will just have her stay at my home and let her surf or skype or whatever, but thought I'd ask you first.
Her main goal is getting internet access along with something to drink but she is a tea drinker so good leaf tea is always appreciated.

Second request is, she, I and one other friend are attending a meeting near Avenue Rd and Lawrence W on a weekday. We should be done at around 7 or 8pm, so we want to eat in the area afterwards. My friends are looking for "something different", they say. More specifically, they said...
- no seafood (they get plenty of that in Japan)
- not Asian, not North American or Hawaiian
- not French, Italian, or other "western" cuisine
- eastern Europe, Middle Eastern, African would be interesting
- open to fusion, or other "creative" stuff
- nothing too expensive (max. $120-130 pp incl. tax & tip, alcohol excluded)
- cheap is fine but not take out

walking distance (maybe 20 mins max?) from the intersection is ideal but they are okay with taking a cab if there is a worthwhile place that has "something different".

Third request is, they will be going to the Cirque du Soleil show near Cherry Street T&T (forgot to ask which date) and wants to eat before the 8pm show.
They want to eat close to the Cirque location, walking distance if possible, but is there any decent restaurants in the area? I've always thought of the area as industrial and not touristy at all.
They will do any cuisine, eat-in desired but will take-out if they hav eto. Main thing is that they are not late for the show.

Last request is, we are looking for a weekday lunch spot near Finch x McCowan at a non-fastfood place. They are okay with anything other than seafood and Asian cuisine, although, "something different" is always preferred.

Please help... I am a seafood lover and not familiar with these areas.

  1. Don't know if this helps, but The Only Café (not really a café, but they have a café right next door called "The One", near Donlands, is open late... at least till 11:00 PM, but you should give them a call to check their hours. They definitely do have wireless.

    1. And, with respect to where to eat near Avenue Road and Lawrence, what about The Copper Chimney?

With respect to your weekday lunch, what about Roti Hut? It's located just off McCowan, south of Sheppard, at 351 Pitfield, and it's open for lunch.

      1. I would agree with Copper Chimney for Indian food as your best bet in the Avenue/Lawrence area. Another option is to go over to Yonge and Lawrence and have good Mexican food at Milagro. Looking at the map, it may actually be closer than Copper Chimney (which is further North, close to Wilson). Both would be a good 20 minute walk or a short cab or bus ride.

For Cirque, the closest restaurant is Cherry St. Restaurant, basically right across the street. This will be the first time they are open during a Cirque performance, so you probably want to call and make a reservation FAR in advance. The space is beautiful, I don't know about the food. When the opened a year and a half ago, they were serving humble and very good diner food. Somewhere along the way, they went "hip" and I stopped going. I'd actually love to hear a report on dinner.

You're other option near Cirque is to go North of the Gardiner and hit up something in the Distillery District. Longer walk, but still doable.

        1. Does Asian cuisine include Indian? If not, a great choice for lunch at Finch and McCowan would be dosa or the mini tiffin.

Second that. Saravana bhavan is my go to weekday lunch spot when I'm in that area (finch&mccowan). They have a very good vegetarian lunch buffet for around $10pp which includes freshly made dosas. Can't beat it!

          2. If you are looking for a coffee shop near greenwood and Danforth the other place to try is Taps and Tales. Yes it is a pub but they have free wifi. It is my local the staffis great.
