Possible Closings on W72nd St. (Earthen Oven and Fine & Shapiro?)
Since Monday, Earthen Oven has had a sign on its front door: "Sorry. We are closed today". Then I noticed most of the place settings, that were still there on Monday, had been cleared from the tables on Tuesday. This place was a great neighborhood option when it first appeared. Service and food quality declined over the past years although it was still decent as we don't have many good Indian alternatives in the nabe. Perhaps they are just repairing the place. Time will tell.
Speaking of repairs, Fine & Shapiro has papered their windows as of last weekend , A sign on their front door mentions the plan for ongoing reservations. Although I'm not a fan of the place, it has been around for 80 years.
Anyone know the scoop on either of these places?

Sucks that Earthen Oven closed - I've only been a couple times, but I did like the food.
Last time I tried, Indus Valley is still good. I also don't mind Indian Cafe. Of course they're far cry from best Indian restaurants in the city, but they satisfy my craving when I want it fulfilled ASAP.

Fine and Schapiro has reopened. In a report on eater.com, Earthen Oven owners stated the restaurant was too expensive to operate.

re: JoLi
is it possible for something good to open in the west 70's? i had so much hope for a renaissance of sorts for my hood, but that doesn't appear to be happening. hopefully the Greek place that's taking over Compass will be good. Fine and Schapiro may as well have closed. Their food is atrocious and overpriced. and Energy Kitchen? no thanks! Sad state of affairs when Dallas BBQ becomes the best restaurant on the entire block!

re: coasts
I agree but, sadly, the quality of the food at this Dallas BBQ is far worse than most of their other locations. Aside from living near this one, I work a block away from another Dallas BBQ. lol. I can usually manage a burger, whenever I am desperate, and their onion loaf is good if prepared correctly, primarily at their other locations,
Lansky, which has never been good for pastrami/corned beef, is not even good in a pinch for comfort food . I've eaten there less than 5 times and, after not eating there in approximately a year, I stopped by on one of the recent monsoon days. Without even being finicky, their food is stale and tasteless, and my server returned 3 times to repeat a very simple order. Ok, at least she tried but this was just plain bad, food and all. It wasn't this bad a year ago.
I am looking forward to Loi as well. Until then, Insomnia Cookies (Amsterdam and W79th) will continue to be my dinner.
Any word on Jalapeno?
